Having said that, most file systems are mature and stable enough these days. I personally moved from ext3 to JFS 12 months ago and love it.
I agree with you (I have standardized on XFS as my filesystem of choice). I figure that so long as Arch's install CD supports the file system in question, you will probably be okay.

I generally format my external devices as NTFS and mount them with ntfs-3g. As I understand it, FAT fs's have a 4Gb file size limit, so you won't be able to save any large files (such as DVD's) to them.
The next time I re-partition my HDD (which will be soon), I think I'm going to look into this for sharing my files between Arch and Vista. I can set it up now, but I'll wait till then ![]()

By the way, while we're talking about filesystems and partitioning, does anybody know how reiser4 compares with reiser3 in terms of speed? If it's anywhere near as fast as reiser3 in handling small files, I believe I'll use it for my /var directory; otherwise I'll just stick to the same ol' reiser3 fs.
