Re: Rolling Releases

To be fair, there's a certain simplicity and benefit to having a release schedule like Ubuntu's. Just as there are additional complications that come along with rolling and highly customizeable distros like Arch. It's rather easy to produce a package for a release of Ubuntu and expect it to work, and keep working for 6 months no questions asked. With a rolling release it's quite possible for something critical to change at just about any time and require updating and repacking. Likewise, it's far more likely casual updates could require some effort on the user, or even break something else. They're simply targeted at differernt crowds.

Ubuntu is far more easy to support than Arch is. This is one of the reasons when I invite someone to try using Linux, I send them to Ubuntu. If they have a problem it's easier for me to help them, or even they help themselves. The problems are simplified by the scheduled releases. However having to wait six months for official updates, along with being able to control things more to my liking is also the reason I use Arch myself. wink

Re: Rolling Releases

Totally different target audience from Arch too. We tend to be sensitive about community size, a lot of people don't like to see Arch grow too fast because its meant for a very specific type of crowd. If it starts growing really quickly it probably means that its not suitable for that original intended audience anymore, which would suck since it leaves them out in the cold.

The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.
