Windows, even Vista, is "Hillbilly" in some technical points. It's slow, antiquated...
Hey! I'm a Hillbilly, and I'm not slow and antiquated! Well, I'm 38 so I might be antiquated to some people! Don't forget the atom was split in "Hillbilly" country in Oak Ridge....
Just kidding with yah! I took no offense. And I really am a Hillbilly. I say "tar" for "tire", "winders" for "windows", etc. I make 'L' sounds without my tongue touching the roof of my mouth, etc.
Oh, and I'm DEFINITELY not disagreeing that Linux is superior to Windows for developers and many other things. I use it for everything except a game or two my sone and I play.

I use it to study. I have used ubuntu.
I use flex && bison (for compilers), gcc(ftw!!!) and java.
I used scheme and Mathematica already.
Linux just rocks on.
I also use ftp, sftp, ssh, apache and php here.
The only thing i never use linux to is:
- gaming;
- MS Visual Studio.

If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

I use Arch for everything, except a computer in my room that I run OpenBSD on. It doesn't do a whole lot though.

Unfortunetly the shop I work for is tied to Adobe CS3 so I'm stuck on a Mac for work (I know, I know... such a hardship.
). Otherwise I would use Arch for work.

hmm. i also use arch, not for work though although iv'e done that in the past(before my unemployment:P) and as been said before here by some: arch is not a set-it-and-forget-it system.
You have to pay attention to updates. Read the news. Read and implement the changes said by the updates. Preferably sign up to the mailinglists. Don't upgrade unless you have time to fix potential errors. And generally know your way around linux and know how to fix problems. Just today, or yesterday considering its 04:12
, I spent about 4 hours fixing three problems resulting from a 'Syu'(it has to be said however, i use Testing, i didn't have as many errors i'm getting now as when I was not). I would have spent the entire day had i succumbed to the defeatists mindset.
If one didn't have my level of know-how one would have had to reinstall. So it's not for the n00bs unless they accept that, and want to learn.
Now, even when that is said and done, I say it's better than all the other linux distributions iv'e tried and definitevely better than XP, because you can't /do/ anything when a bug crops up: your fucked.

I used arch while studying (along with Gentoo) and now I've installed Arch on my macbook pro from work. (at work, all +/- 50 employees work on Apple stuff, except 2 people).
I tried macOS for a few weeks but it was really not my thing (little control over how everything works, and very little customization options)

I work as a SAP consultant, so what are my chances to use Linux at work? It would be my personal project one month full time to get all stuff somehow going under Linux (but it would be exciting to see it happen).
At home I use Linux for one year by now, and I'm already using tiling window manager and mostly only CLI apps (rtorrent, ncmpcpp, mc, vim+gcc...), but still I feel little uncomfortable here and there... I need to fix my desktop pc and play some games under wine probably ![]()

It makes you crazy, doesn't it? I would kill for sloppy focus in OS X. Or being able to theme it without buying third party software.

Let me see...
1. I write my articles and poetry in openoffice
2. I make presentations in Impress
3. Geany is my primary programming tool, with C++ being my language of choice
4. I learn Qt and QtDesigner
5. I am *trying* to learn Python, KDevelop and bash scripting
6. I use several popular educational software via Arch
7. My internet activity takes place in arch
So yeah, I too use arch for study/work.

I'm a Software Developer for a company that develops software for the Windows platform, but still I use Arch at work every day
. My productivity levels would drop quite significantly if I would use Windows, so we figured its best I stick with Arch! ![]()
Actually, it was part of the sign up contract, that I did not have to use Windows as the primary development platform.

I also use arch for everything... openoffice for papers, presentations, whatever, has nice programming utilities, its about as bleeding edge as the distro that i've used the most (debian lenny/sid) and its stable...no dependency problems. You can connect it to external displays, projectors, etc no problem, plug and play stuff works great, and I get great battery life on my laptop, and its a heck of a lot faster with arch on it than anything else I've ever tried. Also use it for gaming... was playing halo yesterday in wine, but i ususally stick to opensource games such as tremulous.

I teach a UNIX basics course at the university and I use Arch as the reference GNU/Linux platform for theory and exercises.
I think it's a great OS for teaching because of its KISS approach, so it can provide the students with a very general UNIX knowledge.
I also use Arch for my studies.

I use Arch Linux for school. It works just fine, and now that I've got a printer, I don't even have to save things as Word documents!

I am a Ph.D. student and use Arch solely for all my work, writing dissertation, running simulations in Octave and MATLAB, preparing class notes, and even taking a break with some games. I have found it to be the best Linux distribution for how lightweight it is and ease of configuration. This has been especially handy for setting up an optimal distribution for running demanding numerical simulations.

I use arch on my laptop and it works perfectly. I plan on going almost entirely to Arch by the time I transfer up to Colorado State University next fall.
