[Solved] Random freezes, keyboard lockups

There doesn't appear to be anything to explain this in the logs, but Arch tends to randomly freeze, sometimes a kernel panic sometimes not, either way it forces a restart.

There are also times where the keyboard becomes inoperable and using halt won't work, a hard reset is required.

So yeah, I have no idea where to start. I posted this in another forum but perhaps I will get better responses here.

I am running Arch64 on an xps m1330 with an nvidia 8400m, running gnome with compiz-fusion-git.

Hi, paste your "dmesg | tail" output.

There was nothing in dmesg except boot up messages

Re: [Solved] Random freezes, keyboard lockups

Sometimes GNOME freezes on me like that on my laptop (which is why I switched to the lighter and much stabler XFCE).  It could most likely be compiz that's giving you this problem; try not using it and see if this freezing problem persists.

My Rigs:

- HP zv6203cl, AMD Athlon 64 3200 S939, 2x512MB DDR400, 80GB 4200rpm HDD, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M 128MB, Arch i686 cool

Re: [Solved] Random freezes, keyboard lockups

For me it's a problem with the newest kernels and possibly the power cooling or some other motherboard fault. I have to run different distros if I want to go into x these days .. sad

Check if it's similar to these problems:

Please report whatever you can find out!

Re: [Solved] Random freezes, keyboard lockups

They both sound somewhat similar to my problem, especially the first one.

The freezes are coming less now but the keyboard lockups are far more common. Symptoms are: everything works except keyboard, if a key was depressed it remains depressed for the remainder of the boot. Sending the shutdown command through gnome doesn't work(says it sends the sigterm signal but nothing happens)

Re: [Solved] Random freezes, keyboard lockups

Have you tried the new kernel to see if that helped the problem?

The problems seem to have been fixed since the second to last nvidia driver update.

Re: [Solved] Random freezes, keyboard lockups

Hm, indeed. Now I have been up and running the whole day with no freezeups. And the system is snappier than ever as well big_smile

I will test it for a few more days to be certain tho
