I had the same problem with openoffice 3.0 not responding, but when running from konsole It said that indirect rendering was disable, edited my xorg.conf and added this:

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

restarted X, no problems with OOO so far and didnt remove OOO in home or  "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome".

I added the export to my /etc/profile file, and did a reboot. Fixed the problem altogether so far.
