do compiz and video playback work at the same time with catalyst 9.4?
Offline
They should work already in 9.2, when using Xv/AVIVO output.

Yup, video works with composite...
Altho now that i look closer video does look a bit blockier than before

Hm anybody have lib32-catalyst-utils 9.4RC1 pkgbuild ?
that could be a problem... hope a TU will pick catalyst up soon.

I sold my ATI card during catalyst 9.2, and composite and video playback was awful

@Dinth
I have catalyst 9.4 version in my repo.
[archiso-live]
Server = http://arch-live.isawsome.net/packages/
Put this before testing repo in /etc/pacman.conf. You do need testing cause it depends on xorg-server 1.6.0.
I hope this helps.
I'm working on a live cds based on Archlinux. http://godane.wordpress.com/

Are you aware of any benchmarks comparing catalyst 9.x with radeonhd drivers?
Offline
@xaff
Phoronix will probably have some soon,
It seems benchmarks are all they do.

I guess the fact that they've dropped support for my R480-based card is a sign I should upgrade.
I haven't lost my mind; I have a tape back-up somewhere.

Nah, just use the open drivers, I hear they're good.
If you get a bleeding edge card then there will be very limited options for drivers.

I should try them out at least to see how good their 3D performance is. Will be an interesting experiment.

Their performance sucks In Urban Terror i get 20 fps, while with catalyst 8.12 i get 60 fps with my r500 based card. The interesting moment is that with catalyst 9.x drivers i get 20fps too

With support for catalyst being dropped I decided to try the opensource drivers with my laptops ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. xf86-video-radeonhd and xf86-video-ati both worked but the later seems to have the edge with performance though both lag behind the catalyst driver in 3D anyway. One thing I do miss is the ability to change the power settings with aticonfig --set-powerstate 1. I'm guessing this functionality relies on the catalyst driver being installed. Is there any way to adjust power levels with the xf86-video-ati driver?

Doesn't directly apply, but may be interesting: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=13566

I installed the 9.3 driver on my Arch x86_64 with KDE4.1. It still has the flush_tlb problem (same patch for 9.2 works for 9.3) and the /usr/lib64 symlink is needed still, but it has the redirected direct rendering which works.
With composite enabled I don't seem to get 2d slowdowns any more while using 3d (like watching a movie and bringing the bar up in smplayer or right clicking on the movie would slow it down dramatically).
I do get a 1-2 second pause but then the movie seems to resume at fullspeed. No flickering while composite is enable either
I do have problems running eve-online in wine with composite, eve-online loads but my desktop wallpaper is the only thing that shows until I disabled compositing.

That isnt RDR, it is some Ati own solution

Your right, I thought I read something on the phoronix forums they were going to implement something similar to RDR in fglrx but I couldn't find the thread.

Sorry if this is painfully obvious, but how are you installing the newly-released 9.3 driver?
The PKGBUILD in AUR is for 9.4, I tried modifying it for 9.3 but it didn't work.
I use x86_64 btw.

Xf86-video-ati has excellent Compiz/KWin4 perfomance as I can see here. And makes the system far more responsive that that thing called fglrx.
X1600 card here.

I too would be interested to know how one goes about installing catalyst 9.3 in Arch. I ran the installer and did aticonfig --initial -f, but xinit just tells me there is an error finding modules glx, dri and fglrx.

There are catalyst-old with 9.3 version in aur

Can I control fan speed with Xf86-video-ati?
