Please write a bug report at http://ati.cchtml.com

It happened only on kernel 3.0, yes. But it only send me back to TTY once, other times my system just froze but those times I could not find an error message regarding fglrx. It send me back/hung on me when I tried to open Firefox (when I clicked its icon on awn dock) and froze when I tried to open VLC's preferences.. downgraded VLC now to find out if that helps. Are you sure I should file a bug report on that?

My suggestion would be ... to wait ... for a new version ...

What if you will copy /etc/ati/control file from 11.7 into 11.8?

Is other acceleration working fine - like glxgears, compositing etc?
What if you will turn acceleration off in both VLC and FF - is it still crashing?

I'm running compiz, so compositing is definitely working. I downgraded VLC and switched to Chromium, haven't had an issue so far. Also, VLC's issue happened only when opening its preferences window :\

EDIT: downgrading VLC didn't work..

Done. No difference though (that is, still freezing when doing 3D).
Thanks anyway!

Looking for a notebook right now, won't have rather depressing AMD graphics. Looking forward to THAT!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys, I'm trying to make vaapi acceleration work on my Mobility Radeon HD3470. It sports UVD+ and not UVD2 so I thought it should not work, but  then I found this:

  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1518160

so I decided to give it a shot. I installed these packages:

extra/libva 1.0.14-1
catalyst/xvba-video 0.7.8-4
community/mplayer-vaapi 33161-4

I am currently on catalyst-daemon 11.8 and linux-pae i686 kernel. When I try to launch mmplayer I get a crash:

$ mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi dvd://81 -dvd-device /media/arch64/home/mori/qBT_dir/Transformers\ -\ 2/

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

OK, it was an incompatibility with linux-pae, with stock kernel mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi works (and maybe recompiling some packages would make it work also for linux-pae). Still, I cannot see any benefits from using vaapi: cpu usage is the same, maybe UVD+ hardware really doesn't work...

Go on decent video card. You will be able to obtain one- NVIDIA GT 430 or ATI 6450 for less than 60Euros.

I find your comment quite sloppy and out of focus. First of all, I'm trying to make my video card work and your suggestion does not help at all. Second, I don't want to buy a new VGA. Third, and most important, I said my card is a MOBILITY Radeon HD3470, which means I'm on laptop so I cannot change the VGA.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Maybe this is wrong here, but I think it's still the best place to ask:
I wanted to test a bit what you can do with xen but the default fglrx module doesn't really run inside a dom0. I googled it and apparently you need some patches to the fglrx module to make it work. But the search results were pretty old. So I wondered if somebody knows about a proper source for the patch for a current fglrx and maybe we could make an AUR package. I saw there is nvidia-xen in the AUR but not fglrx for xen.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm getting a black screen after installing catalyst.  There's no way to get back to the console either.  I installed it the regular way, via the catalyst & catalyst-utils package in the AUR.  I had to force the uninstallation of libgl using pacman -Rdd.  After it was installed, I ran aticonfig.  The Catalyst wiki pages seems to have removed quite a bit of information, although I suppose I could look at the look at the history.  Still, the final outcome is a blank screen.
Any suggestions?  Also, what's the recommended way of installing catalyst on Arch?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Any of you managed to get 720p or 1080p playing in any video player without tearing? If so, how?

EDIT: HW is an i5 with 12GB RAM and a HD5850.

I think enabling tear free desktop fro catalyst control center should do the job. Be aware that you may experience some performance penalty, try to disable desktop effects in that case.

Yea, tried that. The performance hit was too great. I'm running a tiling WM so not many effects to disable unfortunately.

Then I'm sorry, I don't know any player that can give good performances with tear free enabled, at least for me. That's why I don't use tear free desktop.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

OK, I have read through this thread, the various wikis and a ton of forum posts/blogs, etc and I still cannot find a definite answer as to if the Radeon HD 6x (Northern Islands/n900) series of cards will work on Linux. I know previously that the Catalyst driver did not support this series but have read contradicting posts saying that is does now. I just ordered a HIS H679F1GD Radeon HD 6790 Video Card - 1GB, GDDR5 with an Active DisplayPort to dvi-d connector for my 3rd monitor and need to know if this will function correctly under Archlinux?

Sorry if this has been answered before as I searched and did not find anything.

Thanks in advance :-)

BTW I am running Archlinux x86_64

I tried it but didn't notice this bug.. What i do have is a certain stutter/hangup for a couple of msec in mplayer2 but i don't know if this is related to catalyst. I do have tear-free desktop enabled btw.
