I presently hate AMD/ATI. I thought I had everything going well, but everything has deteriorated since my Radeon 4870 died and I had to replace it with a ~$30 5450 for the time being. My system will run for days without crashing, but as soon as I open firefox or thunderbird to check email or it seems like facebook is a bad culprit, sometimes it crashes my entire system (ie cannot switch to a terminal or anything - complete freeze). Some games have strange video artifacts or areas of the screen are completely white that should otherwise be scenery (kinda hard to explain).
The 11.10-2 driver did not cause lockups for me, but now that the kernel is >3.2 I have to use a newer driver. 11.11 is even worse. I really think the problem is a crappy AMD driver release...I mean what the heck is up with the xv video crashing? Seems like pretty fundamental stuff to me. I may switch to the xf86-video-ati for the time being as system freezes are not too fun. Oh yea, I use KDE for now, if that makes any difference. I may switch to xfce soon...just haven't wanted unforseen problems from switching on my primary computer I use for everything.
Is there an estimate on when a 11.13 version will be released to possibly ease my pain?

Has anyone got catalyst-11.12 working on the latest kernel? It doesn't work for me on anything past 3.0.x on my Radeon HD 6950. When I start X I just get a load of lines on the screen and the system freezes.

I think a lot of people have catalyst 11.12 working on more recent kernels Shaurz.
My setup is:
Catalyst hook 11.12
Kernel 3.2.1
Kernel boot options: "nomodeset vga=0"
Xorg 1.10
Model: HD5730 (on Lenovo Ideapad Y560 laptop)
Works great under KDE (and I heard it's getting better in Gnome as well).

I finally figured out the problem. In modprobe.conf I had this line:
options radeon modeset=1
Removing it solved the problem. But with the latest kernel I have a new problem - I can't get the network to work. Guess I'll post about that somewhere else...

I am running Catalyst 11.12 on kernel 3.2.1-1 with Xorg 1.11. My card is a HD6770.

Hi all,
I had to reonstall Arch on my Lenovo x121e (E-450). Everything worked well om the old installation.
Now I encounter some problems. I don't get direct rendering.
I have:
Xorg 1.10
catalyst-utils 11.12-1
catalyst-hook 11.12-1
A 'fglrxinfo' gives the folowing error:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 139 (ATIFGLEXTENSION)
Minor opcode of failed request: 66 ()
Serial number of failed request: 13
Current serial number in output stream: 13
The fglrx module is in the xorg.conf, it is even loaded:
lsmod | grep fglrx
fglrx 3064599 3
button 4470 1 fglrx
catalyst-hook gives no error.
Following errors are in dmesg:

Any ideas?
I already tried catalyst-generator and catalyst-daemon, both compile the fglrx-module ith no errors, but it doesn't ork either.

11.12 is out since December, you cai install it from [catalyst] repo (see the wiki) or AUR. The next release should be 12.1 and not 11.13 (AMD usually uses a year.month numbering scheme), and I think it is not far since January is going to end soon.

@snack
I see...hopefully it is soon and I pray (have been praying for a few versions) it fixes some of these issues. Every new version I have expectations that AMD never meets.

Could my problem be related due to the update/installation of kmod?
My /etc/modprob.d/ is empty and there is noc .pacsave file!

luz1, I seem to only have this problem with the linux-ck kernel. catalyst-generator shows no errors but Xorg spits the same errors and warnings.
EDIT ( Here's what Xorg.0.log gives me ):
[ 11.330] (WW) fglrx(0): board is an unknown third party board, chipset is supported
[ 11.330] (WW) fglrx(0): Hasn't establisted DRM connection

EDIT 2: Turns out your problem is not the same as mine which seems obvious now. linux-ck-kx must use the linux-ck-kx-headers package to build the fglrx module and I had linux-ck-headers.

@luz1
I have same problem since upgrade kernel 3.2.1-2.
I checked my startup option. Previous is:
vga=791 radeon.modeset=1
Change it to:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda5 ro quiet pci=nocrs vga=791 nomodeset
Now erverything is OK.
Offline
I have the "nomodeset"-Option already in the menue.lst!
Maybe the solution is the pci=nocrs option. What is the effect of this option?
The problem was with the 3.2.1-1 Kernel too.
The compiling of the module gives no error, I also have the right linux-header installed.

According:
http://lxr.free-electrons.com/source/ar … pci/acpi.c
Option "nocrs" do not use "Host bridge window from ACPI" and may avoid some resource conflict. It is usefull on some notebook.
My machine is Dell m102z which use AMD E-350 and Radeon HD 6310M embedded. The packages installed include:
catalyst-daemon, catalyst-utils, 11.12-1
xorg-server 1.11.3-1
libva 1.0.15-1
xvba-video 0.7.8-4
libdrm 2.4.30-1
And Yes, The compiling of the module gives no error, errors while xorg started.

12.1 out.
it surelly does look like so, but i'm unable to download it cuz of : Error 349 (net::ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_CONTENT_DISPOSITION)
Will wait, but not too long
Edit: ok, up again, downloading...
catalyst 12.1
darn, i feel like catalyst's developement is going down and down... changes are smaller and smaller, less and less important...

"Nothing exciting" - that's all you can tell about this release.
I believe that using [xorg110] is still the best (and only?) way with latest catalysts...
AUR updated, repo soon

A bit offtopic but I am interested in your opinion:
I am more than fed up with their attitude towards gnome3. Doing nothing about it is ridiculous because it affects many people, who would be more than helpful to file all the bug reports for them. But apart from that can I ask your opinion about it:
Why is that they don't care about such a big issue? There is at least one distro which ships with it (Fedora). That flickering renders the whole DE useless.
Should I never hope to use gnome3 as my DE?
Because then I won't keep hoping that the next release, the next release, the next release...

What I'm wondering is whether it's AMD that doesn't care about Gnome, or Gnome that doesn't care about AMD.
Somehow the former sounds more plausible.

Hard questions are always hard :>
Yes, it really does look like this GNOME3 support is a hard thing for AMD to achieve...
I hope that they will focus on it much more as soon as Red Hat or OpenSuse will deliver GNOME3 with their distros, i hope.
This is just a shot in the dark - maybe AMD will fix it sooner, hard to tell - i'm not in any relationship with AMD devs nor i'm in beta program.

well, let's do one thing.

I can't risk to lose a day/working laptop before exams. But I'm very eager to check this out.

according to this bugreport 12.1 seems to work well with gnome-shell...
