What's changed since 13.3 beta 3?
Overview- 13.3 beta 3 doesn't recognize my hardware with aticonfig --initial, it leaves me with an AMD unsupported hardware watermark, but performance is good, games are fluid, framerates are consistent, everything seems to work well.
Since 13.4, and any revisions updated here (13.6, plus revisions with patching) recognize the hardware, aticonfig --initial generates an xorg.conf, and the AMD unsupported hardware watermark is gone, but performance is poor, reported framerates are high (80+ FPS on Minecraft, 100+ on Team Fortress 2), but it lags, the action will stall behind mouse movement, before rushing ahead, or on Minecraft, jumping to catch up with the game, even compositing window managers run sluggishly. It's a bizarre and frustrating problem. Even when sometimes it's not slowing or speeding up, the mouse movement is always about a quarter-second behind, and the slowing and speeding will kick in moreso when there's lots of action.
The card's a Radeon 5470M, i686 Arch, i3 processor. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
I've no idea why 13.3 won't recognize the card, and no idea why 13.4+ performs so poorly, and does recognize the card. Even some technical notes on changes would be helpful.

For some strange reason, the installer from Amd's website worked well. All the Opengl effects work well with catalyst 13.6 and Xorg 1.14.
Can you install catalyst-hook once again and paste Xorg.0.log?
If any of you use lightdm as a display manager along with atieventsd, you’ll need to patch /etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh so it can find where lightdm stores the X authority data. Here’s a modification that works for me.
Looks useful, can I borrow it from you and use inside catalyst-utils?
@pYrO1v1aniac:
looks like a good material for a bug report...
Feel free to add the comment or fill new bug report - I've found this report related, I also created this report.

Hi Vi0L0,
I just want to report that the latest version of your catalyst (hook) breaks my laptop's backlight.
I'm no more able to change the display brightness when X is running: whatever value I write into /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness the actual brightness doesn't change. If I stop X, everything works as expected.
I tried to disable the Vari-Bright feature from Catalyst Control Center but nothing changed.
Should I try an older catalyst version?
As always, thanks for all yours efforts!

Workaround is to set the brightness multiple times. It eventually works.

Thanks. I asked this just to know if it was a known bug.

Sorry I'm on Debian now. Don't have Arch installed.
This might be related to this: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pa … river.aspx

Hi all.
I try to install catalyst-total-pxp on my computer, which has Intel and ATI mobile radeon 5650
I install the package, have disabled mode setting, and have made sure the config aticonfig gives me is sensible. Whenever I start the x server however I get no screens found error.
Does anyone know if this device has specific incompatibility?

Welcome to the club williewillus. The 5650 chip doesn't seem to work with catalyst >= 13.4
You can find bugreports at http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=831 and http://devgurus.amd.com/thread/166671
I hope AMD will fix this in the next stable, however 13.3 is running fine for now.

Hi,
I wonder if there is an utility coming from catalyst packages that allows to measure FPS in game ?
What is your favorite color ?

So. Anyone using Mandelbulber with Catalyst accelerated OpenCL? There's even a network rendering feature now which is GREAT feature as I tend to use X over ssh to run Mandelbulber from my server.

Where would I obtain the 13.3 version with pxp patches?
Thank you for your help!

You can use Vi0L0's 13.3 repo:
[catalyst-13.3-beta3]
Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch

Just FYI: I'm using the 5650M (note that it is the mobile version) with 13.4-4 from [catalyst-stable] and using [xorg113], and for me it is working fine. No segfaults or crashes when starting X. However, I have not run "aticonfig --initial" as I live by the principle of 'if it ain't broke - don't fix it (unless you have a lot of time on your hands and no important task ahead)'.

I take this opportunity to give my 2 cents about aticonfig. It is everywhere stated that after driver upgrade one must run aticonfig --initial. My personal experience is that I never run aticonfig --initial after driver upgrade since 2009 and I never experienced a single problem, so I guess that driver upgrade can't break X configuration file and if any problem stems from a driver upgrade then aticonfig --initial is unlikely to fix it. I'm on Mobility 3470.

That's interesting. I use my custom config file, but tried both it and aticonfig --initial, and it doesn't work. Maybe the problem is with the combination of chip and "switchable graphics" part --- I have old switchable graphics (muxed), and I have to disable it for catalyst to work.

I have a Gigabyte "OC" HD7870 and i have 3800 fps in glxgears with catalyst 13.4 installed, kernel 3.8, xorg 1.13 but when i used arch with kernel 3.7 and catalyst 13.2 i only got around 1100 fps on the same machine, same setup. Also games are performing smoothly now so my question is if there some changes to the performance of the catalyst drivers lately coz i want to use arch but due to the much better performance i got on this distro i will not change back yet

Yes, 13.4 should be faster, but mainly on steam games. There should be no such difference on glxgears, also remember that glxgears is not a benchmark

I know it's not a benchmark but the difference is so much higher that i wonder why. That said i tried other distro's also like mint, debian, fedora, slackware and all had about the same issues with the performance. The scaling was wrong and fglgears gave around 1100-1200 fps. All distros i tried had both mate and lxde desktops. The fps in gears and xonotic was the same regardless what i used. I dont play steam games. So imagine my surprise when i tried out Mageia 3 and scaling was setup correctly and the performance in games was alot better and fps in fglgears is much higher out of the box.

With regard to the lag issue with 13.4+ drivers, I got an email today-

Comment # 13 on bug 832 from pierre.boudier@amd.com
thanks for the report; we found a regression in OGL to control the lag indeed.
this will be fixed shortly.
Great news! Looks like AMD are getting responsive to us. Roll on 13.7!

Time to say goodbye to catalyst, maybe. BTW, it seems they're on track with their promise to deliver zero-day support to HD8000 series with open source driver.

Hi, so I've tried this out, and now X starts with no problems! Before I had to reboot a few times before it would behave! Thanks!
Claire is fine.
Problems? I have dysgraphia, so clear and concise please.

I'm using catalyst-hook 13.6 from Violo's [catalyst] repository and xorg-server 1.14.2 on a ATI mobile radeon 5650 and all is ok.

Since yesterday catalyst repository (http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arc) doesn't work. What happened? Bandwidth limit?
