Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys, since i didn't want to start a new thread, I write it here:

Yesterday I saw that a new Catalyst 9.7 is surprisingly available for my mobility Radeon X2300 card too (according to their release notes .PDF). So I consider to switch to it, BUT:

according to AUR-messages for this newest Catalyst, there are some patches needed (as for 9.6)?!
Well, I have never used the 9.6, so can someone tell me what patches do I need for 9.7? I run x86_64.

So I just tried to install this 9.7-thingie usual way (yaourt - AUR) and became following message for aticonfig afterwards:

aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

BUT my adapter (mob rad X2300) IS listed in their release notes! Do I still need to patch it? Now guys, i REALLY appreciate your help!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I just gave up on catalyst, I switched to radeonhd-git, is working better than ati-git. I have way better performance with this.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

yep, that one.

I started using it, because another developer told me it was working great for him. So here I am. I will see if I can get the time to make a custom repo with the latest software that will enable the full potential that is gained by the newest mesa and gallium3d with kernel 2.6.31.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Well, could someone please help me out? I tried to installed this radeonhd-git package too, yaourt seemed to build it right, but then it couldn't find that file...

Solved myself
I didn't edit the PKGBUILD, my fault smile

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to say good bye and thanks for all the fish!
I have to switch to ubuntu for a while until I get my hands on an nVidia card.
Had enough of this joke called catalyst but I need 3D on my damn hd4850 card.

Take care until then (very soon I hope), I will miss you all.

Over and out.

Looks like a beta fglrx driver got leaked http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=301172

From what I can tell it looks like enough is there to build the driver for x86_64 systems.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I am waiting for someone with enough time to put that one in AUR, the leaked one. So we can get a good driver in the meantime, I read it is way better than 9.7.

And no, I'm not giving up on the AUR catalyst package I want to see it progress.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

kensai, as you are the maintainer of the AUR-Catalyst, can you tell me if there a way to get Catayst (at least that 9.7 with its poor performance) running on my adapter? Please take a look of my post #552.  Do I maybe need some patches?

Thanks in advance

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

No prob smile

I wish powersaving modes were better with xf86-video-ati, it's awfully sunny here in greece these days (43 degrees Celsius pffff).

Except for that, everything else works really great, even KMS (with kernel 2.6.31 and Mesa 7.6git)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

If anybody starts using radeonhd or radeon - reinstall the xorg-server package. dri module wont load otherwise. At least that was the problem here and some other threads say the same.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I need advice
Very recently purchased a notebook Lenovo thinkpad T500 with video ati 3650 (discrete) and intel (integrated).

I never play games with my laptop, only surf the web and programming.
which driver do you recommend for use with kde4 and desktop effects? radeonhd or catalyst?

with the catalyst drivers I can't have installed the drivers from Intel at the same time.

what recommended the old ati users?
radeonhd or catalys?
or the intel (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD) it's ok for this job?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Catalyst, because -- if I am not mistaken -- radeonhd does not have the 3D acceleration, and radeon probably won't have good enough acceleration until 2.6.32.

Over and out.

You know you can just install Arch Kernel 2.6.28 and use the Catalyst Patch Free with 686.

Owe wait you cant. You have to use 2.6.29 with the new Xorg..... Well you can just use the last working Catalyst with 2.6.29 + the patches to make it work.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Takedown: I would just use your Intel 4500. I here the new that new Intel card is not so bad. You should get like 50FPS in Nexis. I so wish I would have gotten that Dell latitude E6500 with that Intel Card. But it is nice to play video games at 200FPS even though I don't play them all that often.

Keep in mind that we bitch and bitch but at the end of the day the Catalyst works vary well, "for Me".

Yes I am very aware of this fact, well I didn't know about the problem with 2.6.29 and new xorg tongue. I've been messing around with old packages without patches and new packages with patches, trying out which one workes the best for a long time now. I just can't be bothered anymore, I need catalyst to "just work" for the moment (even if it is crappy when working). Don't have time to wait for the lovely kensai (who is doing an excellent job btw) to make the next version of the kernel to work and so on. I could just stop updating, but then why the hell use archlinux?.

Don't worry, I've got an offer to switch to an nvidia card from a windows user already (downgrade but still upgrade, funny how that works), I'll be back soon enough.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hum, I think I was wrong, 2.6.28 is the minimum kernel for xorg 1.6.
So, you could just install that kernel and then Catalyst 9.7 will-scratch that, Should work for 686 & x86_64 patch free, Ether way use the patched Xserver with no backfill for Ubuntu too. I wrote a little HowTo on the ubuntuforums.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Someone really should make a proper PKGBUILD for the leaked driver.
I just unpacked all debs in the same folder, made a package of it, installed, and "manually" created the module form /usr/src/fglrx-8.350/.

..and XV and OpenGL in Mplayer works while Compiz is running. big_smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Yeah, I looked at the file structure of the 9.7 driver and moved all the files from the debs into the same paths under archive_files and copied a script file over from the 9.7 driver then compressed it. Then the normal PKGBUILDS required minimal modification (just replaced the source name and commented the extracting of the run file).

Wow, so like they actually Fixed something! Thats no fun. A Catalyst driver without a bunch of patches is like Windows with out an anti-virus.

From what I can tell it looks like enough is there to build the driver for x86_64 systems.

The file is no longer available through the link(s) provided.

AMD may have caught wind of its existence, though I thought they might have leaked it in their own interest.

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.
I'm over it!
