Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

could you also paste log file: strace startx &> startx_strace.log
Edit: looks like it's dying during screen/display preinit, just before "Printing probed modes for output DFP6", hard to see why, on first sight everything looks normal/good
oh wait, you got 2 monitors, while only one of them is mentioned in xorg.conf, what if you will generate xorg.conf with `aticonfig --initial=dual-head `? or what will happen if you will disconnect one of the monitors?
BTW im no expert in multi screen configs

Ran with --initial=dual-head, same thing.
Ran with --initial and only one screen connected, same thing.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

ok, we made some progress, this is our error (for now):

[    84.463] (II) fglrx(1): === [xdl_xs115_atiddxPreInit] === begin
[ 84.463] (WW) fglrx(1): Quitting screen 1 -- no monitor specified.
[    84.463] (II) fglrx(1): === [xdl_xs115_atiddxPreInit] === end
[ 84.463] (II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"

just dunno why. What if you will remove xorg.conf and regenerate it with only first monitor, check this also with only second monitor connected. If still not works, please paste Xorg.0.log only.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

First of all, sorry for being so slow replying.

Tried with both only secondary and primary monitor, running aticonfig --initial before each. Both segfaulting. Xorg.0.log for with only secondary

I tried reading through it and saw that amdxmm.so loading was the last entry, so I decided to give it a shot without it loaded. So I moved it elsewhere, rebooted, and IT WORKED! However, I then tried plugging in the other screen as well, and it's back to segfaulting with this Xorg.0.log.

vaapi acceleration doesn't seem to work with SMplayer (mplayer-vaapi installed) with the latest drivers.

wow, pure craziness roll !, maybe files are broken somehow? have you tried reinstalling or installing from repo / aur?
also maybe you have your old gfx somewhere so you could confirm that its working there?

is it working fine with clis mplayer?: like `mplayer -va vaapi -vo vaapi:gl big_buck_bunny_1080p_h264.mov`
vaapi is fine here, but i never had problems with it while others had, so it doesn't count

I have tried reinstalling from both your repo and AUR several times. Want me to try removing it first?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I just brought my oldie fhd monitor so I could check dual-head setup and maybe help if face same problem... but no, everything worked out of the box. I connected second screen (hot plug), it initialized in clone mode, so I configured it in amdcccle and bam - got multi-display desktop, works as should. Only had to save this multi-screen setup in kde's systemsettings (monitor section) and it's running multiscreen session just after starting kdm. So easily!
Sauerbraten is running in multiscreen mode by default, im looking now like a noobish pro player or something, LOL tongue...
ten maly

I also checked how it would behave when only one screen is configured in xorg.conf, but it started fine, cloned. So there should be no such problem like you have, teozkr hmm.

you can check it out, yes, ie from catalyst-utils 14.4-10 repo package and catalyst-test@AUR (yes, same sum):

For some reason xvba-video wasn't installed.  Must have gotten lost when I was experimenting with radeon.  Thanks.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

it's catalyst 14.3, maybe you did check 14.3 already? should be easy with [catalyst-14.3] repo.
also: is your ubuntu running xserver 1.15? maybe check with [xorg114] repo

I have an odd one. After my 6670 died (well, it's in its' death throes) I replaced it with my old 4670, downgraded xorg and removed catalyst to replace it with catalyst-hd234k. Everything works, but tear free doesn't get saved.

I've read of the problem on dual head set ups, but this is single head only. My workaround right now is to launch amdcccle as a startup program so that I remember to manually turn tear free on, but any idea why it doesn't get saved.

For info,

aticonfig --set-pcs-u32=DDX,EnableTearFreeDesktop,1

doesn't do anything sad

Just in case anyone else has this, I found a solution. It's not ideal, but c'est la vie.

I set up tear free, closed out of amdcccle, and then, as root, copied /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.current to /etc/ati/amdpcsdb

After a reboot the setting persisted.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Catalyst 14.4 has been working great with Xorg 1.15 and kernel 3.14.2 so far as of today! stuff is running smoothly and I'm having less graphical glitches than with previous times using Catalsyt. I ended up disabling GDM and switching to SLiM for the time being, so that I can still use the latest version of GNOME while there is still the incompatibility.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I've probably posted about this before, but I can't remember to be honest with you.  Anyway, when I have firefox open (29), KDE desktop animations are very choppy.  If the firefox window is minimized or closed, everything is buttery smooth.  I know this isn't an issue with my graphics card being under powered, as it's a decently powerful card, but is there anyway I can improve this performance?  Perhaps some tweaking on the KDE side of things?  Thanks!

EDIT: Fixed it!  There was an animation built into the window decorations I was using.  I disabled it and now everything is smooth as butter.  What was happening is that the decoration's animation was playing at the same time as the minimize animation (since minimizing causes another window to take focus), which caused the stuttering.  Shame that the AMD driver isn't better and can't handle that, but whatever, I'm totally find without it.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Has anyone tried AwesomeWM with Catalyst?

When I switch to an empty workspace it takes forever for the windows to disappear.
One after the other they are gradually replaced from top to bottom by the background image.

Is there a known solution to this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I recall some magic happening with Awesome if the --no-argb option were passed. I had no issues like that with or without the option some time back though. Do you mean this doesn't occur with the open-source drivers? If so, I'd recommend you to create a thread for this.
