Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Some weeks ago I installed Catalyst and right after I could not boot anymore. It is a dual-boot computer, so I just ignored this, but now it's time to fix it haha
Previously I was using ATI open source drivers and Xfce4. HD RADEON 7850
When I try to boot, it freezes in the black screen when it was supposed in to "start x", no error is shown, nothing.  I tried adding "nomodeset" to Grub but it did not work.
I have a bad english so my explanation is not the best one; which files/configs should I post here and how?
Thanks

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Looks like Xorg 1.16 has hit official repos now. Have we had any luck getting catalyst running properly on 1.16, or are there still issues such as the one Vi0L0 ran into?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey guys, I have come across a problem with the open ATI driver. Previously I was using catalyst, but as that is now out of sync with the current version of Xorg, I felt it was probably time to upgrade, rather than sit around for several months as ATI get their act together... again.

I have a radeon 7970 direct cuII. The card is attached to 3 1920x1080 screens (two by dual dvi and one by displayport). As a note I am using KDE with KWin. I have also been using the built in KDE app to do my screen configuration.

This card was working flawlessly until I made this switch. I have managed to get past everything to do with uninstalling the stuff catalyst left behind (I think) radeon unblacklisted, bash scripts deleted, catalyst components uninstalled, and the whole shebang. The issue I am running into is one of performance... It is physically painful. My x session with freeze up sometimes for minutes at a time, yet run for equally as long at a solid 60fps?! Additionally, sometimes the max resolution of the displayport output is not recognized, instead defaulting to 1024x800 with no option to go up to 1920x1080, nor is my monitor setup remembered. (defaulting to clone as opposed to the extend I set up. I am not able to enable opengl of any kind and am stuck using xrender. I think this is where the problem lies, but I don't understand what is preventing me from using opengl rendering. All it says is I need to look at my xorg.conf... of which I have none...

I am running kde, with kwin... so I assume I need some form of 3d acceleration. I am using the ati-dri and lib32-ati-dri. I have also added radeon to my mkinitcpio and have run mkinitcpio -p linux. (not sure if that was necessary, as it made no difference.)

As an interesting note, which may or may not be of use... Before I got to this point, I actually forgot to unblacklist radeon, and I had a very smooth experience, but unfortunately I was limited to one screen.

Any thoughts on the matter? I would greatly appreciate some input!

EDIT:
I just disabled my display port and saw a huge rise in performance...

EDIT 2:
This can actually probably be disregarded. It was giving me such a headache I gave up and grabbed a repo for the old xorg. running so much smoother now it isn't even comparable.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Have you read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ca … stallation? I made the switch on a HD7950 and it runs pretty smoothly for me, though I don't use a fancy window manager like KDE.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi all

Don't know if this is the appropriate section, but here it goes.

I'm using catalyst-utils-pxp 14.6-10, with an AMD 6770M, and an i7 2630QM (Intel HD3000). On the intel, everything runs perfect other than having to run acpi_call at boot to turn off the AMD, but that's ok. However, if I try to change graphics, nothing works. I'm trying with pxp_switch_catalyst, and it doesn't show any errors, but if I try aticonfig, this is shown:

aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

If I reboot, or restart X, it hangs on black screen. However, if I run:

modprobe acpi_call;
if lsmod | grep -q acpi_call; then
echo '\_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._ON' > /proc/acpi/call;
fi

before reboot, aticonfig works, but still hangs after reboot. I'm thinking that perhaps the dGPU is turned off during reboot, but I find it weird because I notice a difference in heat and battery when I run the acpi_call. I'm a bit noob in all this, tell me if I didn't tell something important. I'm running 64bits Arch, with KDE.

Thank you

I want to make sure I'm doing this right.
I have VI0L0's xorg115 and catalyst in my pacman.conf.
I have downgrader installed.
I have xorg 116.
I'm trying to install catalyst with pacman.
Here are the results of my installing all the packages listed on the wiki:

Thanks in advance, and thanks VI0L0 for maintaining catalyst.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@olorin: Put the [xorg115] repository entry above [extra] in /etc/pacman.conf and issue

pacman -Suu

That should sort that out.

After that, [catalyst] should work.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Thank you Lightning!

Unfortunately, I hit a snag:

error: failed retrieving file 'glamor-egl-0.6.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from catalyst.wirephire.com : The requested URL returned error: 403 Forbidden

I see that package conflicts with xf86-video-ati, which I currently have installed. Should I drop out of X, remove it, then do my

pacman -Suu

?

Hmm... I get that as well when downloading that file too...

Try downloading it from the Rollback Machine archive for glamor-egl to /var/cache/pacman/pkg (you might need administrator/root privileges to put it in that directory).

That's probably the best way to do it.

Well, someone needs to add "glamor-egl" to the xorg-115 repo.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm getting the following when I try to pacman -Syu after adding the xorg115 repo

xorg-server and xf86-input-evdev are in conflict (X-ABI-XINPUT_VERSION). Remove xf86-input-evdev? [y/N]

and after answering N

xorg-server and xf86-input-evdev are in conflict (X-ABI-XINPUT_VERSION>=21)

Needless to say, this breaks my ability to upgrade unless I include xf86-input-evdev and xorg-server after the -Syu.
I've already tried manually downloading the packages from the repo, clearing them from /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ and reinstalling them with pacman -U <pkgfile>, exactly the same result.
Any hints on a next step?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Strange but true. I went to the extreme steps of removing xorg-server, xf86-input-evdev, and all the catalyst packages entirely, reinstalling to 1.16, reenabling the 1.15 repo, pacman -Suu, and reinstalling all the catalyst packages, and all is now well. Why? Beats me.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi all,

I'm trying to get hardware acceleration in Xwayland working in weston with my ATI card, but it looks like I'm failing.

I've fully updated my system, mesa, ati-dri, wayland, weston, xorg-server-xwayland (as well as xf86-video-ati for X sessions) all installed from the official repos, added xwayland.so module to weston.ini as described in the wiki.

I can launch weston using `weston-launch` from a free VT (either with or without X running on another VT, great!) w/o problems, launching X apps from within weston works, but when I run `glxinfo` to check for hardware acceleration (as suggested in previous posts), it shows the dreaded 'llvmpipe' in the renderer string.
Does this really mean Xwayland is not using hardware acceleration? Is there another way to test this?

Here are some details about my setup:

$ lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV710 [Radeon HD 4550]

I know that in Xorg, this video card model doesn't use GLAMOR by default because it is 'too old' (I had to add `Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" to the "Device" section in xorg.conf to use it). Could this be related to Xwayland not activating hardware acceleration?

Here's the full log of a weston session, with libGL debug logging, with no X running (note the "glamor: EGL version 1.4 (DRI2):" line):

Any ideas? Do we need to wait for more driver support or anything?

This thread is for the proprietary drivers, you realise that don't you?

Why does catalyst-hd234k/catalyst-utils say:

Description : AMD/ATI Catalyst legacy drivers. Utilities and libraries. [*]Radeons HD 2 3 4 xxx ARE NOT SUPPORTED[*]

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have set x to auto start. When it should start, the screen just freezes (no error, nothing).
Adding "nomodeset" on grub, I get this:

[drm:radeon_init] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!

Then it freezes.
I'm using Xfce4. Before installing catalyst I was using ATI open source drivers.
It's a HD Radeon 7850.

What to do? Thanks

sometimes it freezes when I startX

I can't figure what I am doing wrong I tried following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … repository but was unsuccessful, any help with installation of drivers is appreciated

PS: no other Linux distribution boot on this as live environment, does xf86-video-ati works for this GPU ?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I am getting following screen when using xf86-video-ati. No error reports.
LXh03H2o.jpg

It started since 3.12 I think, then I was unable to use opensource driver, only to disable UMS (radeon.modeset=0) but I get only basic graphics. Any solution?
Then I switched to catalyst-test-pxp until xorg 1.16. Now I tried adding Vi0L0's repository and it asked me to import PGP keys, then it says that keys could not be imported because key is unknown. I put repository above all others, then ran pacman -Suu. What can be the problem?

My graphics is ARUBA (HD7640G in A8-4500M APU)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have just found a cause of my problem. It is radeon dpm. After adding radeon.dpm=0 to boot parameters it continued to boot normally.
This is the last line during boot before this screen appears:
fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver
I also found this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … 175427224/
