Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

You are getting segmentation fault, does your catalyst version supports your xorg version? (1.15.2)
Which catalyst version do you have?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Use [xorg114] repo. You will find xorg-xserver 1.14 packages and xf86-video-intel 2.99.907 there
(pxp users noted that even catalyst 14.4 often segfaults on xserver 1.15)

I am using catalyst-total-pxp-14.4
In the description on AUR Xorg 1.15 is supported by catalyst driver

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Because it is, and works pretty well on non-pxp machines. It's just that lately bdero noted what was once noted (and unconfirmed) by jadus - segfaults when running on xserver 1.15.
I think that I will change deps of catalyst-total-pxp and catalyst-test-pxp, sorry for the inconvenience, I just don't have hw to test it and so rely completelly on community on this topic.

Vi0L0,

according to phoronix, http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTc2MzM , there seems to be a new catalyst version 14.8 released.

Don't touch it. This one is for embedded systems. You will likely get a blackscreen, after installing it.

pxp is "complex" subject, if your laptop doesn't support original amd's pxp technology its possible that it won't work. [1]
But don't give up that easilly. Check if also xf86-video-intel was downgraded, as well as other xorg-server packages.
Check mesa and it's links, ie. should look like:
/usr/lib/libEGL.so.1.0.0 -> /usr/lib/mesa/libEGL.so.1.0.0
Try to switch to intel (via ie. pxp_switch_catalyst) and look if it will work.

[1] It could be good idea to check if it's working on ubuntu (ubuntu - because it's working™ tongue) even on pendrive via img or iso+persistent

True that! Research prooved that some girls may even loose virginity after downloading this smile

BTW I already made some comment on this topic on catalyt-test@AUR:

Vi0L0 wrote:

It's a driver for embedded gpus:
http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/embedded/graphics

AMD is releasing it from time to time:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/e … s?os=Linux

It's build on a top of "normal" catalyst, thats why it's often[1] working with pcs gpus.

It's control file is different/crippled, I'm pretty sure that aticonfig will tell you that your adapter is not supported once you will remove xorg.conf - it means problems for newcommers.

If it would be any better than this 14.6 beta then I would think about maybe creating some additional package or something... but on my 290x its no good - it's dropping/missing frames on heaven 4.0 (the only test i made) while having same fps. Its easy to see with unarmed eye - maybe its touched by famous "frame pacing" bug(?)

I know that Phoronix is a good source of news, Im also reading it, but I think that Michael should look at and wrote about the details. It's not the first time he's missing "embedded" magic word...

[1] once I did update to embedded and get comments that its not working at all on some gpus.

Hope that AMD will release new driver before my traveling... You got almost 3 days, AMD! tongue I will be AFK from friday, for almost two weeks :-)

PS. I'm getting almost good results on oss radeon @ 290x, 3d performance is not as good as should be, and mouse is sometimes laggy on KDE but overall im nicely surprised! smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

My notebook supports pxp driver, few months ago I installed Arch with catalyst and PowerExpress support and it worked very very well since last week. Then, for a fatal crash (and because I  realized that Windows is a sh*t), I had to reinstall Arch, but now I don't remember how I configure Xorg the first time

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi! First I'd like to thank Vi0L0 for the awesome repos.

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 5547. This laptop has two graphic cards, an Intel HD 4400 and an AMD Radeon R7 M260. This Radeon card is fairly new; it was released last June. Here's the output of lspci:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT DRAM Controller (rev 0b)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller (rev 0b)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series USB xHCI HC (rev 04)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series HECI #0 (rev 04)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller (rev 04)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series PCI Express Root Port 3 (rev e4)
00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series PCI Express Root Port 4 (rev e4)
00:1c.4 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series PCI Express Root Port 5 (rev e4)
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series USB EHCI #1 (rev 04)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series LPC Controller (rev 04)
00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series SATA Controller 1 [AHCI mode] (rev 04)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 8 Series SMBus Controller (rev 04)
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 07)
02:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
03:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260]

The Intel card worked out of the box, but the AMD card took more fiddling around. You have to enable Vi0L0's [catalyst] and [xorg114] repositories. The driver won't work with Xorg 1.16 and 1.15. I'm using the latest kernel (3.16.1 as I'm writing). I don't think AMD supports the Radeon R7 M260 on Linux yet, and I still have to test its performance. On Ubuntu it was very bad, almost unusable. I'll see if I'm able to get more from it on Arch and post my results.

EDIT: I should add that having a /etc/X11/xorg.d/20-intel.conf file with the following contents caused X not to start. If you want, I can dig deeper and post a few logs.

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "AccelMethod"  "uxa"
EndSection

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I recently switched over to the Catalyst package. I used the Catalyst-test package from the AUR. In i3 I tried to use compton and I couldn't do anything the windows. I couldn't type and the text didn't even show up. I disabled compton and it all goes back to normal. Is there a way I can use compton in i3 with Catalyst?

Here is my xorg.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier     "aticonfig Layout"
	Screen      0  "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier   "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
	Option	    "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
	Option	    "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
	Option	    "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier  "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
	Driver      "fglrx"
	BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
	Device     "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
	Monitor    "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
	DefaultDepth     24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport   0 0
		Depth     24
	EndSubSection
EndSection

And here is compton.conf:

backend = "glx";
paint-on-overlay = true;
glx-no-stencil = true;
glx-no-rebind-pixmap = true;
vsync = "opengl-swc";

# These are important. The first one enables the opengl backend. The last one is the vsync method. Depending on the driver you might need to use a different method.
# The other options are smaller performance tweaks that work well in most cases.
# You can find the rest of the options here: [url]https://github.com/chjj/compton/wiki/perf-guide[/url], and here: [url]https://github.com/chjj/compton/wiki/vsync-guide[/url]

# This list includes all the affected apps I found in my testing. The "! name~=''" part excludes shadows on any "Unknown" windows, this prevents a visual glitch with the XFWM alt tab switcher.

Thanks for any help.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Whenever I try to update catalyst-libgl using:

$ pacman -Syu catalyst-libgl

catalyst-libgl: /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL exists in filesystem
catalyst-libgl: /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibglx exists in filesystem

I get the following conflicts:

And the same for lib32-catalyst-utils:

lib32-catalyst-utils: /usr/lib32/libAMDXvBA.so.1 exists in filesystem
lib32-catalyst-utils: /usr/lib32/libXvBAW.so.1 exists in filesystem
lib32-catalyst-utils: /usr/lib32/libatiuki.so.1 exists in filesystem

I don't want to just delete the files unless it's safe?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Strange... similar error was fixed months ago... check which package own those files with ie:
pacman -Qo /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL

Also don't try to perform partial install/update, run full install like in this example:
pacman -Syu catalyst-hook catalyst-utils catalyst-libgl opencl-catalyst lib32-catalyst-utils lib32-catalyst-libgl lib32-opencl-catalyst

BTW
About the new catalyst 14.30:

Once again Phoronix missed the truth. Phoronix wrote:
AMD put out the "Catalyst Software Suite for AMD Radeon R9 285" for Windows and Linux. While it's aimed for the R9 285, the driver will work with any supported Radeon GPU.

But it's not designed to work with cards other than 285.
It will work if you are updating, but it won't generate xorg.conf on systems with cards other than 285. aticonfig will say that they are not supported. So it does sucks for newcommers.

Look at the size of the control file:
$ ls -l 14.30/common/etc/ati/control
-rw-r--r-- 1 user users 312 08-29 15:54 14.30/common/etc/ati/control
$ ls -l 14.20/common/etc/ati/control
-rw-r--r-- 1 user users 89984 07-11 11:46 14.20/common/etc/ati/control

It has just one line...

That's why I won't update neither catalyst-test nor catalyst-test-pxp nor the repo.

If you have 285 you can download sourceball from here:
-test:
http://catalyst.wirephire.com/tarball/1 … src.tar.gz
-test-pxp:
http://catalyst.wirephire.com/tarball/1 … src.tar.gz
and build the package by yourself :-)

I versioned it as 14.9 so it would be easier to (auto-)update it with cower/yaourt/other-aur-manager

At least AMD make it kinda clear on their site it's aimed at that card specifically.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have a similar issue to Lerp's

After not updating my system for a couple of months I wanted to do a full update using "pacman -Syu"

Among the ouput was the following;

resolving dependencies...
:: There are 5 providers available for libgl:
:: Repository extra
   1) mesa-libgl  2) nvidia-304xx-libgl  3) nvidia-libgl
:: Repository catalyst
   4) catalyst-libgl  5) catalyst-utils-pxp

I typed 4 just because catalyst-libgl sounded reasonable. I have no Idea why libgl was not installed/"provided" before.

Then at the end, pacman complained:

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
catalyst-libgl: /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL exists in filesystem
catalyst-libgl: /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibglx exists in filesystem

When I type "pacman -Qo /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL" I strangely get

error: No package owns /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL

Is the choice of "4) catalyst-libgl" a good one?
Can I safely delete  /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL and /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibglx from the file system?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@hippieben:
lately also I noticed problems with stability. They were probably caused by vaapi, but I had no time to investigate closer. I should be able to look at it this weekend

@presencia:
at the begining check out this command:

i686:
pacman -Syu catalyst-hook catalyst-utils catalyst-libgl opencl-catalyst

x86_64:
pacman -Syu catalyst-hook catalyst-utils catalyst-libgl opencl-catalyst lib32-catalyst-utils lib32-catalyst-libgl lib32-opencl-catalyst

If it still claims about existing files then yes, remove them manually and repeat installation

cool, let me know what you come up with.

I downgraded to 1.15.1-1 and that seems to have plugged the memory leak, so it would appear to be something that was changed with 1.15.2.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Thank you, Vi0L0, for your fast reply.

I installed/upgraded the packages as you suggested. Since pacman was still complaining about /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL and /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibglx, I removed those and the update succeeded.

Then I ran into the issue of gdm inducing a segfault in fglrx, as discussed in #6453 in this forum thread, for example. After downgrading gdm, everything seems to work great now. So I am very grateful.
