If anyone wants to install the radeon driver for Ati evergreen card can do so by using the repo that perry3d has posted in this thread :
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79509&p=35
It works great for my Ati 5850!(no 3d support of course)
What about temperature/fan control? Is my mobility going to fry as of now? I'm considering trying it later, but am a bit afraid of its powerplay related behavior. If it would default to sane low consumption I would be not afraid, but running the chip at high temperature for a longer time .. i wouldnt like to risk.
I have read that 2.6.34 will contain power saving. But how it is working currently?
Also, how can I monitor the temperature of the GPU? Anyone knows?

There is no (and won't be) powersaving features in 2.6.33
Some time ago there were some patches: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 59#p690059
So you may try it. Although i have no idea is 5xxx supported.
Also i have done some research for temperature sensor (i also wanted to check temp on my 4850)... but as i heard on irc channel - "support for reading temps off r600+ isn't in yet"
I guess it will be implemented into lm_sensors.
geodoc is using 5850 so powersaving/temperature isn't important for him.
AFAIK gpu fan will always work faster if only temp of gpu will rise - on hardware level, driver independently.
Edit: but hey - 2.6.33 is almost done - i think it shall be released in less than 5 days. So 34 shall show soon with it's powersaving

Thanks for the info, Vi0L0!
Well, i'll stick to catalyst for now if 2.6.34rc is so close. BTW, i've tweaked my arch a bit, i wasnt aware that 'acpid' and 'cpufreq' how usable is.
No idea, if i was the only one, but now WITH acpid the catalyst can switch the screen off when power management settings of gnome calls for it! I just had to fire up acpid and restart X. (This with 10.2, no idea if it works with 10.1 yet -- does it?)

The catalyst 10.2 work well on my computer. Just reinstall from your repository and before reboot disable kwin with alt+shift+f12. I use KDEmod and an ATI HD4670 acceleration works well
Isn't alt+shift+f12 working as temporary shutdown of kwin? By temporary i mean that after reboot kwin will be enabled by default (ofcourse if kwin is enabled in systemsettings). Cuz that's the way how this always worked for me...
It looks like you are lucker
Or - more probably - you are not using effect that stimulate catalyst to crash kwin. Would you be so kine and test all effects?
Edit: If your kwin crash you can disable it by editing /home/$(whoami)/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc
and change Enabled=true to Enabled=false in [Compositing] section (usually 9th line)

I don't think so, i have a lot of kwin effects activated snow, woobly windows, cube desktop, etc, etc. I just noticed that I can see the available plugins, but they have activity, will be something related to KDEmod instead of KDE?

Could be that KDEmod owns, hmm... we then need a person who confirm that catalyst 10.2 works with kdemod (just to be sure that you Cory are not just a lucker ). Anybody?

Cory, isn't it Compiz that runs there instead of kwin?
Try a
ps ax|grep compiz
That would be strange tho'.

Also strange is that 'explosive window' effect never worked with my kwin - both catalyst and oss driver...

Hello, this looks like thread I am looking for, but 56 pages is...uhm...what about some actuall summary at first post like OSS drivers thread has?
However I tried Perry's repository (i686) but I have still lag with resize at kwin and overall composition performance with kwin is very poor against OSS drivers. Video accel with XV has horrible quality, gl is better but image freeze when I move with player window. Counter-Strike with wine freeze at first screen. I didn't use catalyst for some time, but now it looks horrible than I remember. Is it normal state of catalyst driver or I am doing something wrong? (HD3450, KDE4.4)

then we need to post new thread for catalyst... actually i though about that just for the repo, but im not sure is repo worth it.

Theres no regression (except kwin in 10.2) so it shouldn't look worse then before. The difference is that we now have oss driver .
But yes - it is normal state of catalyst.

Ok, looks like xorg with catalyst fix solve some problems. Only worse kwin composition and game freeze stays

I have no repository for i686 . The other repositories on the first page are guided by some other guys.
And there is something wrong with your installation: on my pc (with a HD4850 and the oss driver) compositing is very smooth and xv/gl video acceleration works fine without tearing.
My proposal.
- You want to play some games: use catalyst. It's faster and supports OpenGL 3.x.
- You want a smooth and stable desktop that can play videos without tearing (also with compositing on): use the OSS driver.

Ah sorry Perry and Vi0L0....there was a misstake at my side
I have meant Vi0L0's repository for catalyst U have repository for OSS and it is 64bit only...I am starting be very confused by this drivers testing
So yes, OSS is smooth with compositing and xv playing, however gl playing has problem with blinking menu during playback and blinking video too. Catalyst has no problems like this, but xv output is horrible, gl is very good, compositing has bad performance and I cant play a game (cs) by wine. There is some change in fglrx with opengl.... So I am thinking about nVidia...but there is no card I can buy, because nVidia has nothing good compared to ATI. Pity...

Buy a GTS250/GTX260. They are very good at their performance.

Then a GT210 and you don't have to care about watts, about the drivers, you don't have to run all the time to seek for better performance, about Xorg standards compliance, about OpenGL problems, about... nothing.

I'm sure it's kwin compiz fusion effects are very different like mouse pointer
WITHOUT COMPIZ FUSION
ps ax|grep compiz
29898 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep compiz
WITH COMPIZ FUSION
ps ax|grep compiz
30701 ? S 0:02 compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
30711 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep compiz
More and more KDEmod suspect. Or maybe is because I'm constantly switching between the open source driver (git packages) and catalyst, who know's? but catalyst 10.2 wok's sucessfull with me

I was looking at this card for some days, but this card is absolute expensive-nopower-nofeatured-shit. I spent a lot of time to study about actual cards and I have to say - nVidia has nothing agains ATI. Question is - wait for better drivers or buy some worse hardware with better drivers.

Someone managed to run ati-stream-sdk-v2.01-lnx with catalyst 10.2?
./FindNumDevices
Supported CAL Runtime Version: 1.3.185
Found CAL Runtime Version: 1.4.553
Use -? for help
CAL initialized.
Finding out number of devices :-
Device Count = 1
CAL shutdown successful.
Press enter to exit...
So far everything seems in order, but by trying to run some example of OpenCL
./NBody
Error: clGetPlatformIDs failed. Error code : unknown error code
I followed the instructions posted by Vi0L0 (changing what is necessary as my x86 and version)
More important is information like this:
If you wanna learn opencl please download sdk from this page http://developer.amd.com/gpu/ATIStreamS … fault.aspx and read installation manual. To get stream to work i have simply unpacked downloaded sdk to /home/Vi0L0/ati-stream-sdk-v2.0-beta4-lnx64 and then edited my /etc/profile.d/custom.sh file and added this lines:
ATISTREAMSDKROOT=/home/Vi0L0/ati-stream-sdk-v2.0-beta4-lnx64
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ATISTREAMSDKROOT/lib/x86_64:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export DISPLAY=:0then just vimed /boot/grub/menu.lst and added "nopat" to kernel boot line so it looks like this:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26-bfs root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/1234567890qwertyuiop nopat vga=794 quiet splash roand rebooted
but the error is the same with any example that attempt to run in OpenCL

Yeah, that's a tough question. I was having a hard time deciding between ATi Mobility and nVidia. Finally decided to go for the better performing, less expensive ATi GPU. So far I'm okay with it, Windows is great and Linux is okayish.

I had a similar doubt one year ago when I was choosing my laptop. But at that time Nvidia mobile chips were in the middle of the perfect storm, with soldering failures and angry customers all around the world. So I decided to go ATI, thinking that software problems can be fixed, even if it takes a long time, but hardware failures are much more nasty to address (especially if your warranty is expired). So far I'm happy with that choice, Catalyst is crappy but for my needs it's ok, and, most of all, I learned a lot of things trying to make it work!
