save the script wherever and make it an executable. Then open the configuration panel and under Applications click New application. Then give it a name and point it to your script and apply.
Then, also in Applications, click Startup Applications. You should then have your newly created application in the selection menu to add.
Cool, I forgot about that.

Thanks!
Another question: what about applications, normally sitting in the tray? I've got wicd for a network manager; it probably works, as there's a connect, but no signs of the app itself. Starting it from the main menu also shows nothing. How am I supposed to accomodate wicd properly?

you will need a tray. there is trayer in the repos which imo can be figured well into e17 with a little effort. Otherwise, there is e_systray in aur.

Thanks again!
trayer works, but to be cool it has to be transparent, it seems. People do have problems with trayer's transparency; any link/suggestion is welcome .
Current problems:
(1) e17 [main menu] is anaware of a lot of application icons. It seems that all KDE apps appear without icons, but OpenOffice applications have no icons too. Curiously, Ktorrent's icon appears in trayer, if nowhere else.
(2) After using file managers in e17 I'm having some garbage icons on the KDE desktop. How to make them live apart?

in kde 3.x.x, I don't think you can.

I run KDEmod 4.1.2

I'm assuming you're using the folder view plasmoid to see your desktop files on the desktop then. You can just change the settings for the plasmoid to have it point to another folder than ~/Desktop.

Back to my dumb questions :
The tray. I tried trayer and stalonetray; both work, both won't get transparent. Any ideas?

This is nice and intuitive indeed:
save the script wherever and make it an executable. Then open the configuration panel and under Applications click New application. Then give it a name and point it to your script and apply.
My only trouble: how am I supposed to get rid of an entity created with "New Application"?

In trayer you need to set --transparent true and --alpha <your transparency value>
for transparency.

Probably it resides in /usr/bin.
I created a launcher for xcompmgr for my e17 startup and named it composite which is at /usr/bin/composite, so I imagine a simple
rm /usr/bin/composite
as root would get rid of it. Not sure if e17 would think the same way though.

But how am I to determine the transparency value? I tried 255; it turned black :) .
Probably it resides in /usr/bin.
My wording may be at fault. I don't mean getting rid of an executable; I mean getting rid of its e17 wrapper, created with "New Application". I just don't want the thing in the lists any more.
