Using all speakers (with subwoofer) using a patch to alsa drivers and I got it from Ubuntu lists.. It has some small problems tough such as high volume levels etc.. (can provide it if you guys want) I have touchpad working but it doesn't work as it works under mac os x leopard..

broadcom-wl etc. works too..

I'm using Arch stock kernel with testing repo (2.6.30)

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Cool. Looks like Broadcom-wl now supports the new kernel. Kick ass, I'm definitely upgrading again.

How'd you get the sound working? (Specifically smile)

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Download the following patch from the Ubuntu team.. (http://raptiye.org/media/files/alsa-dri … mb51.patch) Then download alsa-driver-1.0.20 package from ALSA web site. Patch the code (you would probably have to change some parts of the patch to get it applied) and make && make install

After this step, try alsaconf to configure your sound card and that's it.. You have to set all of 6 channels..

I was forced to compile bcm5974-dkms against the 2.6.29.x kernels but with the 2.6.30 I don't have to compile it, it just works. But I've a HAL conf file taken from Ubuntu.. Rather than using HAL, you can use xorg.conf to configure synaptics driver..

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Tunix with this method you can avoid set the speakers or the line out volume manually?
The patch link is broken..

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Following the instructions in the sound section of the Macbook Aluminum wiki I've got both speakers and line-out to work without patching anything, but I've got to set manually if I want to use the line-out or the speakers..
My question is if with your patch you can avoid this letting alsa to find whether or not the headphone jack is plugged and switch to line-out automatically.
Thanks smile

Re: MacBook Aluminum

@fedfol: as far as i can see, jack sense doesn't work with the patch.. i have to lower to sound to something like %20 or both headphones and internal speakers are playing..

can you please tell us which instructions you followed without using the patch? there seems to be a few variants of the new Macbook Pro's btw.. Mine is 5.1 and using mbp3 is problematic since left speaker, subwoofer and etc doesn't work.. With the patch, everything except jack sense etc works!

Re: MacBook Aluminum

The wiki is:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook_Aluminum
but instead of putting

options snd_hda_intel model=mbp3

in /etc/modprobe.d/option as described i've wrote in

/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf

but i don't know if it makes any difference.
With this my macbook 5,1's speakers works, but i don't understand when you talk about subwoofer etc.. are you talkin of the different channels of the builtin speakers?

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Macbook Pro 5.1 's have builtin subwoofers.. Their left speaker and subwoofer don't work with mbp3 definitions..

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Hi mbp aluminium users,

using a MBP 5,2 aluminium (17''). With some effort (a few hours and a few googles), I have almost everything working here, except speakers (jack out works).
What works:
- braodcom-wl ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM4312 )
- nvidia, 3D, compiz
- backlight, multimedia keys, keyboard backlight ( with pommed )
- suspend
- touchpad works ok ( only installed synaptics, no tweak)
- of course, mouse, keyboard, font antialiasing, etc...

For now, I'm really happy with the performance/speed. Will see about reliability after a few days of use.

I also have an ubuntu install on this machine. Ubuntu works great too, and most things work out of the box, but the performance is noticeably better with arch (even though this is a subjective criteria, I haven't got any numbers for you).

Using pommed  you should be able to.  I can on my 5,2.

Re: MacBook Aluminum

hi everybody,

i have a macbook pro 5,3 / june 2009 edition with 2 graphics cards:
-nvidia 9400M
-nvidia 9600M

the nvidia-driver can only use 9600 (works fine, but it consumes a lot of battery-time)
Did anybody get the 9400 to work yet? Does anybody have an idea how to do so?

Further:

sound not working yet (tried the wiki)
no pommed yet

everything else is working fine!

Re: MacBook Aluminum

@fedfol: as lifeafter2am puts it, yes, with pommed, you can (I had to follow the instructions to change the pommed.c to accept 5,2 as in the macbook aluminium archwiki page). but after that, all fine.

@lowrex: nope, no way as far as I know to make it use the 9400. I'd be interested too if anyone can offer a solution. On the other hand, compiz is running very smoothly with the 9600. But you're right, having the choice would be nice.

Re: MacBook Aluminum

I'm using the minidisplayport-DVI connector, and works flawless. I've read of some other problems with the VGA adapter that's why I went for only the DVI-adapter in the first place, but can't help you with this one.

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Can anyone tell me if the macbook pro 5.5 has the anti-capslock "feature"? More here http://rentzsch.com/notes/applesantiCAPSLOCK
This can be very annoying when remapping the caps lock. The problem is solved in mac os x which somehow tells the keyboard to disable the feature when remapping in system preferences.

A solution when using the apple aluminum keyboard is #setleds -L +caps < /dev/console which turns on the led and tricks the keyboard into disabling the anticapslock.

But does this workaround work on the macbook pro 5.5? Easiest way to test is to use xev and tap the key rapidly.

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Whiii sound on my MBP 5.5 (13inch June2009 model)!

I've basically moved in some new alsa modules (on a very ugly way) that will probably be included in the .32 kernel. For people who don't have a clue what's inside /lib/modules, just wait for this kernel.

Originally I used this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … stcount=98

Here's my ugly PKGBUILD with a precompiled "-march=nocona" package : http://86.80.126.176/packages/alsa-snapshot/

I tried to install the package, move out the conflicting files from my current kernel and installed the package again. Alsaconf created /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf like this:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

Now after a reboot, sound works fine big_smile

Yep it does. I don't have the time to try if your workaround works (since I don't understand what to do).

su
setleds -L +caps < /dev/console

Works on the apple alu keyboard.
