Thanks T-u-N-i-X, as always, macfuse to the rescue. Have you tried it? Does it work well? I don't want to mess up my filesystem !

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Finally managed to install arch.  Works great, extremely fast, faster than I expected.  I have one concern though.
When I was configuring it I did pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils to install the latest nvidia driver and the utilities.  However, Im not sure if it got installed because I dont have 3D acceleration and when I try to access the nvidia xserver settings it tells me that I am not running the nvidia driver and it tells me to edit the X configuration file, (run nvidia-xconfig).  When I do that in the terminal it gives me this error,

Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

WARNING: No Screen specified, constructing implicit screen section.

WARNING: No Layout specified, constructing implicit layout section using screen
         "Default Screen".

Re: MacBook Aluminum

That's what I did.  I entered sudo nvidia-xconfig and I got that error.
EDIT- for some reason after reboot it works.  I am trying to setup my external display.  The nvidia x server settings detects my display, but when I press apply it stays in no signal.  How can i configure it?

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Anyone having problems with thier fans with the newest kernel?  I swear they are not working right, with temps hovering above 70C and fans still running at 2000 rpms.  I can set the speed manually, but changing the fan1_min and fan2_min values does absolutely nothing.

Running MBP 5,2.  Here is the relevant dmesg:

Re: MacBook Aluminum

idle/low activity (cpu<10%), average temp ~ 50 degrees, max (within the 20 sensors) ~ 58 degrees, fans @ 1600rpms

high cpu load (max), max temp (within the 20 sensors) ~ 85degrees, fans @ 4 to 5000rpm

Edit: note that I have a home brewed fan control.

Re: MacBook Aluminum

some more questions from my side (just got a mbp yesterday wink)

- touchpad works fine for me with the default synaptics driver (including multitouch etc.), but i can't figure out how to select multiple lines of text. a single line works by clicking and dragging left/right, but moving up and down doesn't. does anyone have any ideas or maybe a .fdi file with sane defaults?

- bcm4322: i have a 5ghz wireless-N router on channel 44, i can see the channel after installing crda but not my access point. any ideas..?

edit: managed to fix both smile

[2010-01-03 00:12] upgraded alsa-utils (1.0.21-1 -> 1.0.22-1)
[2010-01-05 09:34] upgraded alsa-utils (1.0.22-1 -> 1.0.22-2)

I don't know which one of these fixed the issue, but the long standing sound problem seems to be fixed:
1) jack plug is now detected and properly cut sound to the internal MBP speakers
2) Master volume now controls (also) the headphones/jack

yeeha :-)

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Hi, I'd like to use Arch with with my lower end NVidia 9400M instead of the 9600GT.
From what I understand, therefore I have to install Arch using the EFI boot method instead of the emulated MBR Apple uses for Bootcamp.

I remember there was a tutorial how to boot into Arch via EFI (without rEFIt), but doesn't find it anymore. Anyone has a link at hand?

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Google is your friend. I've never found any documentation on efi booting in arch, and I've used some ubuntu posts/guides. Here they are:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBo … 5-2/Jaunty
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=995704
http://grub.enbug.org/TestingOnMacbook
http://grub.enbug.org/TestingOnEFI
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=141333

I've spent hours trying to make it work, without success. The boot would hang atfter loading the kernel and the initrd. Can you please report on your progress? Thanks.

Re: MacBook Aluminum

Hello here,

I'm a Macbook pro 5,3 user (June 2009 15" model) and i'm running Archlinux. So far so good everything works except one little thing : the microphone. In fact it is working but at a very low level. If i use KWave sound editor i can hear me but i really need to scream at my computer. In skype i simply hear anything. When i was running my old MSI laptop i used to have a mic boost thing in alsamixer but apparently it's not there anymore. Anyone here as the same issue?

As a side note if i plug an external webcam with a integrated mic everything works at normal level.

My modeprobe.conf contains (because it seems to be the same cirrus logic chip as the 5,5):
options snd_hda_intel model=mbp55

I'm not running the "pulseaudio" thing so it should simplify the problem. big_smile

Thanks for your help.

Re: MacBook Aluminum

the mic boost option should still be there.
preference -> volume control -> preference button, select what you want to appear in volume control.
jut so you know, in my case, the internal microphone input volume is actually controlled by "recording" capture and digital.

Well, it's not there even in alsamixer.

I'm using KMix, i have added all the channels so it's a perfect "duplicate" of alsamixer. But still no digital, neither mic boost i just have "capture" activated and volume max.

Do you have a MacBookPro 5,3?

Re: MacBook Aluminum

ah, well, out of luck then. May be someone else here can help you. Otherwise, fill a bug with alsa, and wait some weeks/months. They were good in fixing my card drivers (as I posted a few post above, everything works now for me), so eventually yours will be fixed too :-) In the meantime, external mic !

Interested in your fix for the first problem.

I still don't have a real touchpad feeling as OSX gives me. In OSX you can tap and hold with your thumb and than with another finger move the cursor to anywhere in the screen. In linux I have to 'click - hold - move while clicked' all with one finger. Two finger scrolling and three finger-tapping all works, but moving a window to another location or selecting multiple lines of text in a document is a pain...

THX!

while it's still one finger to drag, i think it works pretty well and it gets 'normal' quite fast. also, in my experience using the middle finger works best for an accurate drag. smile

Anyone having problems with thier fans with the newest kernel?  I swear they are not working right, with temps hovering above 70C and fans still running at 2000 rpms.  I can set the speed manually, but changing the fan1_min and fan2_min values does absolutely nothing. Those wait status messages just keep coming.

i'm trying out kernel26zen-git 2.6.33, same problem there. did you figure out what the cause was earlier?
