I just check out pytone out of their svn trunk, it works under 64bit, but didn't manage to make the alsa work.

I have fallen in love with mpd + ncmpcpp. I used ncmpc previously, but switched yesterday after noticing ncmpcpp in the screenshot thread. Eather one is a great choice for mpd client though.

Since i find making playlists with ncmpcpp/ncmpc as fun as using Windows i use Sonata for that task. Much better in my opinion.

I've added an x86_64 patch based on svn revision 348, so x86_64 is now available in the arch array. There's a post-install message to x86_64 users that they're getting some svn code. It starts/plays properly on my x86_64 rig.

Note that i686 users are still getting the stable 3.0.1 version.

Just discovered cplay-mplayer. It is simple and nice. It comes with no documentation though: the following article explained to me how to use it:

When you're in cplay, hit "h" to see the controls.

Yep, I've already downloaded the cplay-mplayer AUR package and read through that article. It seems good so far.

I've only played individual sound files at a time, so I never noticed the lack of gapless playback. I don't use my computer for playing music often.

I am surprised nobody mentioned Mp3Blaster. It's not a front-end to MPD so should work fine for your needs. Although, personally I love mpd + ncmpc.

Ricemonster: +1. I still cannot find a SINGLE player, cli or otherwise, that has as powerful of filter capabilities as CMus. Also, Ncmpcpp is beautiful .

I really like moosic, it's very like mpd but doesn't actually play the music itself; you tell it what apps to use. In this way, it can support any format. Not many frontends and not available in Arch right now though, both of which I intend to do something about once I've got some other commitments out the way.

In the meantime, I'm using MPD/Ario.

Weird! after reading this thread, I tried pytone, and fell in love with the gui. However, while it was still populating it's database I:
a. Played music
b.closed the console window from in which it was running (to see if it kept playing... it didn't)
c. re-opened a console window and re-executed pytone. It started up without problem, but at some point (the database was still populating), the gui froze. eventually, the music stopped, and became completely unresponsive. I attempted to kill the application with ctrl c, but it didn't respond, so I once again closed the console window.
d. re-opened a console window and re-executed again, this time, the gui never gets drawn, and the program immediately freezes.

My first thought was that the process was still running and had become zombied, but a check showed that no such process was running, so my conclusion is that I broke it by somehow screwing up the database (by closing the urxvt session), or maybe the database choked on some file that I have in my library, and the program isn't quite robust enough to handle the problem. I'll figure out where the database is, and try rerunning, but I'm very disappointed!

OK, It seems that it _was_ a db problem, I located, closed with and destroyed the db, then restarted the program, and it freezes at about 194 artists. To be fair, I have a middle size collection (less than 10k songs) with many different formats, and some of them have special characters that some programs might not be able to handle very well. I'm dissappointed, but for now I guess I'll stick to ncmpcpp, and the occasional mocp for my cli music needs. It would be nice if there was a gui that looked a bit more like pytone that was available for mpd. It looks to me like pytone is dead.

I like herrie, but I wish it had a few of the essential keybindings displayed by default. Its very simple and the directory navigation is intuitive (for a vi-user).

Moc is about the best you can get at the cli, the range of options available in ~.moc/config should satisfy most.
