I'm not sure if this is related, but I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.4 and without Gnome installed and I'm getting a segmentation fault when trying to start Xiphos. I even installed the gnome-icon-theme package, but it didn't fix anything.

I figured out the solution. I was talking on IRC with one of the project admins and there is a problem with the dependencies with Xiphos. xulrunner should be listed as a dependency, but it is not even though it's required to run xiphos. I didn't have xulrunner installed, so I installed it and it worked.
Also, make sure that xulrunner is 1.9.1 or lower. It doesn't work with newer versions of xulrunner. I installed 1.9.3 first and the same thing happened. Hopefully this helps others out.
