I think I'm comming close to a permanent setup...
I call It "Evil Gray"
Evilwm with small hack + conky + semi-opaque urxvt + transparent trayer
Using CheesyBeef's conkyrc (modified a bit)
Do you use every window manager known to man ?

real transparency inside out can be set with xcompmgr alright! but try adding
urxvt.transparent: true
in your .Xdefaults!

Nice. Even though I've been trying to be minimal lately, I think I might try Gnome again and truly customize it like you have. In the past, I used to always keep the Ubuntu-default-looking Gnome configuration. I would definitely change that up.

I can't quote everyone so here it is:
Yes I have used almost every window manager known to exist, provided I could compile it.
I have most of them installed still. I like experimenting
To get pseudo-transparency in urxvt you also need to set the color depth afaik
Here's my relevant urxvt setup:
URxvt.transparent: True
URxvt.shading: 100
URxvt.tint: #1a1a1a
URxvt.background: #1a1a1a
URxvt.foreground: #ffffff
URxvt*cursorColor: #ffffff
URxvt.borderColor: #1a1a1a
URxvt.depth: 24
edit: Actually it seems it works without the depth parameter too. Odd. I haven't been able to get real transparency though. Would appreciate some hints (I do run xcompmgr)

First you need depth 32, not 24.
Then you specify an opacity for individual colors (typically the bg color), either as an argb color:
URxvt.background: argb:cccc/cccc/cccc/cccc
or with an opacity in brackets:
URxvt.background: [90]#000000
A thing you need to know is that the opacity is already multiplied in the color values. If you set an alpha of cccc, your colors will range from 0000/0000/0000 (black) to cccc/cccc/cccc (white), so the first example above is a slightly transparent white. Same thing with the bracket notation but you have to convert bases which is an additional pain.
This is all written in the man page, though.

What does not kill you will hurt a lot.

I use [50]#1a1a1a as bg and depth of 32 and it doesn't work
Offline
i use the background rgba:0000/0000/0000/4000 and depth 32 notation which works fine with xcompmgr in awesome but not in evilwm xcompmgr displays shadows etc but does not seem to handle the transparency in evilwm i think it must be a problem with evilwm not urxvt.
