3 active threads about fortune? maybe we should rename it to archtune?

or better yet let's change the distro name to FortuneLinux :-) Sounds nice isn't it? At least very optimistic...

great! do you keep a bookmark-collection somewhere?

i started one here:
http://dmoz.org/Bookmarks/D/damir/Computers/fortune/
(seems that the server has some trouble at the moment - i got timeouted sometimes)

you can email me your links, if you want me to add them there

I search and browse internet so often that now I usually cache most important urls directly in my brain :-) Recently my friend asked me to help him find some sites that I saw some time ealier and I didn't even have to use google this time - I just told him several urls from my memory (some of them were really weird). You can imagine how surprised he was. I think I'll need a doctor soon ;-)

If you want all url for fortune files I put them all in the pkgbuilds (if I could find the source page of course). So you can copy/paste them all from the forums. All my fortune files bookmarks are now in these 3 threads.

@luisfelipe: tnx for the link. I had this kind of project on my (very long now) todo list. Some day maybe I will even turn this idea into a program :-)

Roger that. There is still hope because it looks like there will be more releases...

And speaking about bookmarks for fortune files. Dp, have you seen this? :-) http://directory.google.com/Top/Referen … ions?tc=1/

Re: fortune

dp,

finally I was able to install the fortune-mods group. But shouldn't the fortune-mod's that were
available before be on it too ?

he he ... indeed .... yes, FortuneLinux would sound really optimistic ;-)

i remember the first linux i installed (linux esprit using kernel 1.x) said after each logon: "Have fun" ... what was after a while really boring --- then installing the first BSD, i was really happy with fortune in my profile and computing became really interesting :-)

i informed the people maintaining them, but we are not working 24/7 for archlinux, so this can take some time

Re: fortune

Another link http://www.textfiles.com/directory.html with tons of quotes and not only which could be converted to cookie files (this category http://www.textfiles.com/humor/TAGLINES/ is a good candidate). I'm leaving this one for people really interested in it.
I made a few new fortune-mod pkgbuilds (added to the second fortune cookies thread) with many new cookies (or not so new - some cookies can repeat in different files but it's impossible to check them all :-)). Some of them include examples of converting text files the to fotrune cookies format.
I also made a pkgbuild for an independent fortune cookie application (smartbee) with it's own large database of cookies.
I didn't make pkgbuilds for these two applications:
http://www.geocities.com/jasonpell/fortune.html
http://www.anarres.org/projects/gfortune/
because they are outdated almost as much as the main fortune-mod and I don't really see any advantages over it and smartbee.

This debian package http://packages.debian.org/testing/virt … -cookie-db includes some other fortune files in several languages (it's more or less the same what we discussed above) that should be easy to build (examples of how to use debian files - if there is no other source - are included in the previous pkgbuilds).

Re: fortune

If I'm not mistaken, the main fortune-mod was updated just a few months ago. The update
was mainly focused on internationalization and stuff.
It would be great if there was a way to check for duplicates on fortune files (perhaps
I'll try to take a look at that later)

btw, dp , I know that people are busy. And I appreciate it very much that they take their
time to update arch. We gotta love those maintainers smile

Re: fortune

Checking for duplicate fortune cookie files is easy since pacman takes care of this (file conflicts). But some fortune cookie files are modified by their maintainers so it's possible that for example same Einstein quotes can be found in different files. This is of course extreme situation when you have most available fortune cookie files installed (like me :-))

Another thing that will make it difficult to find duplicates is that they are formatted in a different ways (tabs, line breaks, spaces, quotes, etc.). If you find any obvious duplicates let us know.

BTW try smartbee package - it has a nice formated independent and integrated database of more than 100 000 fortune cookies. You can use it toghether with the standard fortune-mod.

Re: fortune

Hello,

I have a fortune file of more than 7000 haiku poems from the japanese master Kobayashi Issa.  I made this collection several years ago, and used it happily in my Slackware laptop.

Now that I have switched to Arch, I have created a package with it.
I hope that all Arch fortune fans will enjoy it:

Cheers,

PS: Sorry for raising this thread from the grave big_smile
