Edubuntu 7.04 at school running openbox 3, added by my. It looks like this too full teachers the teachers .
The setup runs on standard PC server with up to 6 connected X300 ncomputing clients.

Well to be honest I never used gnome to that level of configuration, so I can not help you with that. However this should be related to Metacity and I am not sure if Metacity can do that (sorry gnome users .... I am not an expert at that), but Openbox can do such stuff and even more. In addition Openbox can be used as full replacement of Metacity (but that you probably know already :-) )
Regarding the terminal - it is urxvt :-)

You could probably turn off the bold option for the urxvt font in your Xdefaults. pcf fonts look terrible when bold.

A screen from my FreeBSD7.2 powered EEE1000H. Went back to terminus from profont/montecarlo on this machine. using patches for certain letters like 'a' and some cyrillic letters.

Gnome on 2x17" monitors, Apple wallpaper (please don't hit me ^^), icon theme is gnome-brave, metacity&gtk theme is dust (all available via AUR)
