Definetely does not, especially the part with fglrx driver makes this solution completely useless. I tried it and xorg-server failed to start.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I didn't mean this as a permanent solution, but rather to see how hal detects your mouse stuff without conflicting xorg entries. Check out what /var/log/Xorg.0.log says about your touchpad. I agree that this would be annoying to use with the fglrx driver.

There's a bit of a problem with reading this file, The X server just hangs and nothing can shut it down - not even ctrl+alt+bkspc. So I suppose I could get it via ssh, but this solution is pretty weird.

You should be able to use Ctrl+alt+F1 to get to vc/1, but if that doesn't work, boot without x or boot from a live cd or ssh in and look at the log file. Then move the xorg.conf file back so you can at least get a semi-working system back!

You tried replacing "mouse" with "synaptics"? Try commenting out that whole section.

Gah! Sorry! I didn't mean to break it, just trying to help. But what fun would linux be without breakages? tongue

Did you try the suggestion in the second edit of my last post?

Breakages are neccessary to learn! ;D

I tried it and now it works again (just as at the beginning of this thread).
But I think we are going the wrong direction with this, aren´t we? hmm

BTW some lines of my Xorg.0.log (Synaptics-stuff):

(II) config/hal: Adding input device PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad
(**) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: always reports core events
(**) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Device: "/dev/input/event6"
(II) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Found 3 mouse buttons
(II) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Found x and y relative axes
(II) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Configuring as mouse
(**) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: YAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5
(**) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: EmulateWheelButton: 4, EmulateWheelInertia: 10, EmulateWheelTimeout: 200
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" (type: MOUSE)
(**) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: (accel) keeping acceleration scheme 1
(**) PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: (accel) filter chain progression: 2.00

another weird thing: I tried changing /dev/psaux (btw: if I did "cat /dev/psaux" and moved the pointing stick... gave me the same as /dev/input/mouse2 just when touching the pointing stick) with /dev/input/mouse2 and still works just the pointing stick.

Well, I'm at a loss. Anyone else have any good ideas? Maybe you guys can ask upstream for help.

Hmm, I do have one last idea, I justo do not have time to test it, cause I do not have my pc with me right now. I think I could downgrade the hal as well... if it doesn't work I will do a clean install from the ARM 2009-4-4...

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

I have the same issue, but it's not a problem of how the fdi file is read.
When I look at my xorg log I can see it sees my options:

(II) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: buttons: left right middle double triple
(**) Option "SHMConfig" "true"
(**) Option "TapButton1" "1"
(**) Option "TapButton2" "3"
(**) Option "TapButton3" "2"

And if I disable hotplugging and use old style options everything is ok, so where does the problem come from ?

How do you do that exactly? I mean the hotplugging disable...

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

New thing: in my Xorg.0.log I have found this:

(EE) Failed to load module "synaptics" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

and according to this warning I made some research and I have sumbled upon this page: http://forum.soft32.com/linux2/Bug-4258 … 95252.html so it seems like quite old bug. I've got extra/xf86-input-synaptics 1.1.2-1 so it is quite new...

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

Got it!!! I had to downgrade my xf86-input-synaptics to 1.0.0-1 and it works now!

So it loads the file now? The 11- one or the 99- one? Do you know if this is an upstream bug?

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

Well I don't think it is a bug, I just think the older of xorg-server version is not compatible with the latest release of xf86-input-synaptics. As you can read above I have downraded my x server on purpose to install original catalyst driver (proprietary). And yes, there probably is a bug with the 11-x11-synaptics.fdi that this file is not being read at all. Although I think that maybe it is being read but overridden by xorg. Because I tried changing my keyboard layout for GDM and I've found a solution using similar file and it worked quite ok, but only for GDM. I am not sure about this thing.

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

Disclaimer: I don't understand what's going on.
My system just developed this problem today. Strangely enough, I can't find any relevant package updates since the last working boot... and after double-checking the FDI and rebooting, my system could no longer survive starting X... once X started, it'd stop noticing mouse/keyboard (even capslock) and power button events and require a hard shutdown. After disabling x11, I saw that HAL wasn't starting. I disabled HAL too and tried running hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no and it died on some assert with no relevant looking warning before the crash.
(Yeah, this info's pretty useless, but I don't remember the message and I'd prefer not to reproduce this ever again smile
The fix for me was just to rm /etc/hal/fdi/policy/*... something has made the defaults sane lately anyway, so I'm not too unhappy about this.
I hate how error-prone the FDI's are to write, and wish some sort of debugger/tracer existed for them... (/rant)

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

I fixed my issues. They were related to dated upstream info and faulty wiki info. I updated the wiki with my findings and my (hopefully sane) config even. I do hope that I can spare you guys the night's amount of debugging that I had to do in order to fix this up.

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

Thank you very much for your work, but when I look at the wiki page's diff I don't see an indication of why a working FDI would have broken (unless perhaps it used a type other than type="string" for config params... but that was not the case in the custom FDI file I had been using until this issue appeared.) Given that I did have a file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-... that used to work perfectly, does it look like I'm missing an important point?

Re: Synaptics: /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics doesn´t work anymore

Can you try out my file and see if it works for you? If there are no apparent changes, see the output of lshal and look for synaptics to see whether it merged the settings. Be aware that the settings in the default config will always be merged first. If my config won't work then the .fdi probably isn't related.
