I'm resurrecting this because I'm having the respawning problem (x64), but the inittab.pacnew is the same as initttab, and has:

c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty1 linux
c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty2 linux
c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty3 linux
c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty4 linux
c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty5 linux
c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty6 linux

I'll try changing to vc/*

You may want to start another thread on this. The respawning too fast messages can also come up from other problems from within inittab.

As well as, in my experience, problematic video drivers.
