The live CD is a copy of Arch Linux. Only difference, if using KDE the sound card, X and USB mouse are atomatically configured and there is one icon configuring the network. Other configures are manual.

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

You can edit everything in /etc but the configurations are not permanent.

For permanent configuration you need one USB Thumb Drive (USB stick min. 64Mb). When installing the USB storage system (tdu-install), the installer will move /etc in Thumb Drive and also create one new userID (with KDE setup) where user can configure his/her own, download e-mails, save docs, etc.

Of course you can always save in HDD or Floppy.

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

Im thinking in building my own liveCD for a specific reason and porpouse, as i cant find one that fits my needs.

The main goal of the liveCD would be to help me having my development platform all the time with me, this way i wouldnt have to depend on other peoples OSs or PCs...

Ive been searching and found several ways to proceed, but as i want it to be Arch based (due to speed reasons) i was wondering if you could give me a hand or a couple of tips...

Thanks in advance!

This is an awesome idea.  Document the procedure, it'll go in the wiki.

Great idea. What development are you planning?
C/C++? GTK+?
If it had these it would be very handy for me too.

Thanks, I will.

Right now, i have this planned:
C/C++, GTK+, Python, Haskell and Java.

Haskell and C++, coz im seeing them at the university.

Im planning to do this, mainly for the university, as the PCs in the Linux laboratory... well, they suck... they are Pentium4 with an outdated ditro and missing pakages making them behave as Pentium MMX with win95, and believe me, KDE its not nice on those smile
Then, there is the issue when we do group work, and i end in a friends computer with winXP... just not having a console or Emacs/Vim for programming/editing drives me mad. Not to talk about not having multiple desktops, or crappy window management.

The first of the tries will have E0.16.7  as "desktop" (wm actually) some IDEs (Anjuta, Eclipse, Kdevelop and maybe Mono) a good editor as Emacs (or gVim, both suit me, but prefer the first) and some other apps, as firefox, instant messager (gaim or psi) and such things...
Of course, all the libraries, compilers and other stuff requeried for any development will be included.

Right now im in the planning and research stage... ive done lots of the late but not much of the first, so until i have a better organized project, there is not much to tell about it. But as soon as i get something going i will shout it over here lol

At first, i was going to make it based on Debian, then on Slack, even Morphix and Knoppix crossed my mind, but i remembered about AL-AMLUG and thought i could make good use of all the effort AMLUG has put in it... also having the CD i686 is a pro, as i dont think i touch a PC less than that for almost anything (except a P133 i have right next to me).

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

I think that the amlug cd uses an older version of gcc.  Try running pacman -Syu to update your installation first, then use pacman -R packagename to remove the packages that didn't work and try installing again.

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

oi, my apologies. smile

Your problem must have something to do with black magic. 8)

Are you running the programs that aren't working from CLI? is there any errors? are you running syslog? if so, any erros in /var/log/debug or /var/log/errors?

Thanks for reminding me to read more closely next time.

GNOME is not included. If you know the name of package, check the list:

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

I downloaded 0.51 and did an install using udev and reiserfs.  But when I rebooted, I was getting a "Can not access the filesystem" (might not be correct) error message.

The config file in /usr/src shows that reiserfs should be built in to the kernel.  But after screwing around for awhile, I just installed again with devfs and ext3 and it worked fine.  So, I'm not sure whether it was udev or reiserfs that was the problem.  Just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks. I didn't test with reiserfs (only ext3). When I get time I will take a look.

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

I wanted to get to us a i686, udev distro and your live-cd fits the well.
Thanks for a great project. I downloaded the live-cd did a hd-install. It is awsome. I did make a custom kernel for my hardware. I have udev, sound, printing running flawlessly. I am using reiserfs. I am using the latest bk series with the cfq (con's scheduler). Man is this fast. Great project.

Oh, I forgot lm_sensors and hddtemp displayed using gkrellm.

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

Rasat, you're live CD just saved my linux install. I had screwed my inittab, and I could not make any live CD recognize my sata hard drive. Downloaded your distro, and it worked great. Thanks a lot.

By the way, I noticed a problem with it booting in a two optical drive PC. I have a CD drive, and a DVD drive, and if I booted the cd from the CD drive, it could not mount it, as it was not /dev/cdroms/cdrom0, but cdrom1. It could not find any file (obviusly), and crashed. Booting it from the DVD drive (cdrom0), it worked fine. Don't know if you can make a workaround for this.

Re: Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD)

Complements on AL-AMLUG 5.1.
I have done a HD install and all went pretty well
I had/have four issues with the install.
1) Intial install halted at the first thumb drive question. Console would take no keyboard input.
solution: change keyboards, originally I was using a viewsonic keyboard with two built in usb ports...the keyboard would work after usb is started
2) I choose reiserfs and udev like Freakyc. udev works, reiserfs causes a boot error.
solution: switch to ext3
3) Sound does not work, no snd device created in /dev...
I take this is part of udev,  I have a onboard intel8x0 chip.
solution: still working on it but I am new to udev.
4) nVIDIA drivers won't compile ....no kernel sources
/usr/src only contains patches and a config file....
solution: dwnload the kernel and compile with the config file.

If anyone has solutions/better solutions please  pass them on.

If you have time, please try with devfs to check if its a device problem. No need to install, check if hd-install can recognize the driver. I don't have a scsi to test.

There is a topic asking about the same problem (udev and SCSI partitions not mounted):
