Re: tons of udevd instances

Don't know if it works, but what about cooking a usb thumb drive with freedos (use unetbootin for point&click goodness) and flashing from there?

That's what I intend to do, but I've never done it before, and booting fro USB is kind of a mess on my laptop. Unetbootin didn't work, I think I'll give (manual) syslinux a try (it was the only thing that worked for the Arch install images).

I have an Optiarc AD-7560S (on a MSI GX630 laptop) and the udevd cpu usage issue was replicating on my machine.  I had two workarounds for the problem:
- to install an older udev version or the udev-ubuntu package
- to keep some CD/DVD in the drive.

I've searched for a firmware update for this drive. The original firmware was SX01 and I installed SD05 (i.e. from dell http://ftp.euro.dell.com/rmsd/AD-7560S%20SD05.zip).

The firmware update solved the udevd cpu usage issue. Curently I'm using udev 151-3 with kernel 2.6.33-ck.

Dude...  This had been bugging me for so long... Couldn't find the source of the damn thing!!!
Thanks.

Worked for me also! Thanks. Firmware update is so obvious. I can't believe none of us thought of it. Thanks again.

You're the man!!!

Exactly!!!!

Holy mother of all strange things ... yikes
I can't even express my gratitude for this solution due to my unlimited happiness for the moment!
You have no idea how much this was bothering me ... No more waiting for eternity at boot and no more cpu harrassing for nothing... When I bought my laptop I started cursing because I had software problems on Arch with new hardware, that kept going on and on ....
The only thingy left now is the freaking ATI closed driver ....

Thanks a lot astralys!

Re: tons of udevd instances

Update: Though I have an Amilo laptop, I decided to take the leap and updated my AD-7640S with the Dell firmware (version A03), using Windows. Results positive, my optical drive doesn't spam kernel events in udevadm monitor anymore, everything works fine, CPU usage went down by quite a notch, and I now have a mere 3 udevd instances on my system at all times.

You can find the firmware here. There's a DOS version included in the zip file, so those of you who have some kind of DOS installation or live medium (FreeDOS should work too) can use that instead. (I couldn't, thanks to my weird USB controller)

Re: tons of udevd instances

I'v got an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7583S and I'm having this same problem with two or three instances sometimes using from 10% all the way to 99% of my CPU according to top.

I'm guess the firmware update would do the trick but where do I get the firmware for my drive?

I also found if i kill udev the cpu usage goes back to normal levels, so what exactly does udev do if not having it running isn't affecting how my laptop is running?
