Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I just wanted to report my results here. With kernel26-git kms works, glxgears work with better fps than without kms, googlemaps 32bit (i have64bit cpu) finally work with compositing on but i do get once in a while a yellow/gray border on current windows when a new window appears but only for a split second. Suspend/resume works but for some reason with kms enabled i cant put my laptop to sleep by closing the lid. Without kms it sleeps just fine, with kms i have to manually select suspend to ram.
Can somebody point me to how to apply pm patches to git kernel please?

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I built kernel26-ck with "CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y", so I am thinking why I don't have compositing?

I have the stable packages.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I have simple question - is it possible to run 3d on r600 - Radeon HD3300 on Motherboard with all packages that are in [extra] and [testing]? The problem is when i was compiling packages from GIT and using them on my motherboard HD3200 - the answer of those packages was that I burned my motherboard with graphic card. Now I got radeon 5670 and 3300 and I cannot even use it properly because of stupid catalyst 10.1.

Compositing? That requires working 3D rendering to start with.
Does direct rendering and OpenGL Mesa DRI R600 work?
Check with "glxinfo | grep direct" and "glxinfo | grep -i opengl"

If it does, does your X load the composite extension? Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for it and any errors.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I gave the *git packages another try, but when enabling kms the whole screen flickers - as if the video output was turned on and off every two seconds. Any idea what might be wrong:
I installed kernel26-git, kernel26-firmware-git, radeon_ucode, libdrm-git, glproto-git, dri2proto-git, mesa-full, xf86-video-ati-git
I have a rv770 (hd 4850).

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I'm running the Kernel26-git (as of yesterday) all git gear with Mesa-full
I've got the HD4530

Its running quite well!
Performance is good. I can't comment on Compiz as I'm running Shell at the moment, I've been kinda lazy trying to get emerald to play nice with Shell.
KMS works, 3D works, 3D in wine works and everything feels really quick and smooth.. but weirdly my glxgears runs like ass.

On Catalyst I got like 1500fps, on older Mesa stack I got 670fps now its like 340fps.  I think the exact half drop in FPS is to do with the IRQ waits. Don't quote me tho.

Most things work just fine for me too atm on a Thinkpad W500 HD3650/FireGL 5700. Openarena plays very nicely :-)

Although, I have to admit that compared to using the alternative integrated and simple Intel chip that is also present in this laptop, battery life really sucks with the ATI chip, cutting off at least an hour.

It is almost embarrassing to compare the battery life of this machine to the one of my girl friend's MBP running OS X with an Nvidia chip and everything left at default settings. But I guess that is the price of freedom :-)

According to the following link, the Powerplay power saving, is mostly done, one would expect it to be here hopefully by kernel .34.

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.
I'm over it!

Ok, regarding the yellowish (or blueish) Kwin artefacts in radeon KMS.
I've got the following packages:

glproto-git 20100129-1
libdrm-git 20100129-1
xf86-video-ati-git 20100129-1
xf86-video-intel-git 20100129-1
mesa-full 20100129-1
dri2proto 2.2-1
kernel26-firmware 2.6.32.6-1
kernel26-rc 2.6.33rc5-3

10 minutes into my session I haven't seen any of the artefacts. They just simply went away.

Wow! My kms has refused to work for so long time, until now smile. No artefacts here on hd4850 and kde, also glxgears with composite on is catching 1800fps.
Dzięki big_smile

dri2proto-git 20100129-1

Violo and Neuro,

Perhaps I missed something. Why is it that you two seem to have xf86-video-intel-git installed? Is it being used for anything? I have everything else installed, except I am back on the stable kernel (2.6.32.7). I also boot into kms. I have never gotten glxgears to get a fps over 170ish. I wonder what I have screwed up. I forgot to mention I have an HD3200.

It's not me to thank. ^.^
Actually mesa-git from the repo makes many radeons have no 3d acceleration. So mesa-full from aur is recommended I think.

Does anyone know something about the system completely freezing when trying to start it with KMS enabled?
Is it supposed to work with 2.6.32? Is it supposed to work with 2.6.33? Do I have to patch something? Do I not have to use libdrm-git, xf86-video-ati-git, glproto-git from nightly repo and mesa-full from aur to make it work?
hd 4650 and said setup with 2.6.32 here.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

@Cdh, What do you mean by freeze? If you mean it boots to the point where kms starts but doesn't any boot further, then...  I recall that happening one of the first 2.6.32 kernels I tried. Using a more recent kernel fixed that. If you run into a problem on 2.6.33 where it boots and says it is request some firmware file and just sits there, you need radeon_ucode from aur.

I forgot to mention that im not using xf86-video-intel-git, afaik Neuro is using it cuz he has got intel card which he's using simultaneously with radeon.

So true here.

Cdh wrote:

I had this problem until today. But not freezing - my kernels seems to load kms and radeon module fine when booting and with normal switching to higher resolution, but when it was trying to startx - black screen of death was appearing + my Xorg log was clean.
Edit: oh, and im using no patches.

I will try to post my packages, but it may take some time since my upload isn't flawless.

I have made some mistake while compiling mesa-full, so it is compiled without --enable-gallium option, but still with --enable-gallium-radeon. Anyway everything is working fine. Could it affect on anything? I have also noticed little more fps in games with todays build.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

So here they are (with md5sums):

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4321633/libdrm- … pkg.tar.gz     9535741f533a489201eb01527d8c3f86
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4321633/dri2pro … pkg.tar.gz    891ca6325302344e5d9e73a8c25b3f92
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4321633/glproto … pkg.tar.gz    7d2fe5615cf736e548122d8fab810dac
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4321633/mesa-fu … pkg.tar.gz     96fbdbf60cc0c3116e6f4a0263b3d2ad
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4321633/xf86-vi … pkg.tar.gz     ebc46acca972263f00b9c515dd0eec8c

all packages except mesa-full (7,5MB) are <1MB fat

mesa-full provides freeglut so you may safely remove your freeglut, and is compiled with those options:

    ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr \
    --with-dri-driverdir=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri \
    --with-dri-drivers=swrast,radeon,r200,r300,r600 \
    --enable-glx-tls \
    --with-driver=dri \
    --enable-xcb \
    --enable-egl \
    --enable-glu \
    --enable-glut \
    --enable-glw \
    --enable-gallium-radeon  || return 1

Builded on 2.6.33-rc5-git1, but works also on 2.6.32.6-1-ARCH, so it has to work with other kernels.

I'm using xf86-video-intel because my laptop has two gfx cards: Intel 4500MHD and Radeon 3450.

Please note, if anyone's building mesa-full and has an intel card: do not enable gallium for intel. This will cause lockups in compositing and crash your kernel in 3D. pass --disable-gallium-intel while building and everything will be fine and dandy smile

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Hi All,

I have just upgraded my laptop(Sony VGN-FW53GF) to the latest kernel (2.6.32-6) and now have DRI2 working.
(I had allready installed mesa-full from AUR as well as all the other packages as per the ATI wiki.)

glxgears reports 2090fps with the following comment:

 glxgears
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try adjusting the vblank_mode configuration parameter

.

How do I adjust the vblank_mode? Is this a xorg parameter? (I do not currently have an xorg.conf file)

glxinfo is:

name of display: :0.0
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try adjusting the vblank_mode configuration parameter.

I can now ALMOST play 1080i HD content (like the Sony greece video) ..
CPU is only running at 10..20%, so I guess there is still some work to do in the video driver ...

Anyone have any suggestions in how to get better HD playing? Or do I just have to wait for more driver work ..

Thanks,
Bernie

How do I adjust the vblank_mode? Is this a xorg parameter? (I do not currently have an xorg.conf file)

You're running DRI2 thanks to KMS am I right?

To enable drmWaitVBlank you need an IRQ-enabled kernel. Any of the 2.6.33 will do + radeon_ucode from AUR.

That's strange. I can play 1080p HD content without problems as long as it's a ts with MPEG2 and not h.264. I have a hard time decoding 1080p HD with mplayer-mt, but being able to play MPEG2@1080p (through either -vo gl or -vo xv) suggests it's not a graphics driver issue.

Yep, it's h.264 I am trying to play .... by the way, my windows box at work won't play it as well ..

I was hoping with DRI2 that the hardware acceleration would enable h.264 content ..

Correction, the file is MPEG2, well according to mplayer:

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I've downloaded & installed all of the packages that ViOLO uploaded today (see further up this page), & configured & built the current kernel-git.  (I couldn't resist any longer smile)

Though I now have a question that I'm thinking that I should have asked before building the kernel... :-|

So, please forgive my ignorance, BUT, does the following:

Make sure you set CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m in your kernel config. If you want KMS to be enabled by default set CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y.

Mean that those two CONFIG_ lines have to be set in the kernel's PKGBUILD?

As they weren't in the kernel config options offered during the build?

So probably because of that I don't have DRI2 ([Edit:] not true, KMS bought DRI2 with it, see next post? /edit) listed below, & my glxgears speeds are the same speed as they were with the stable packages:

IRQ's not enabled, falling back to busy waits: 2 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R600 (RV630 9583) 20090101  TCL
OpenGL version string: 2.0 Mesa 7.8-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.10
OpenGL extensions:

And thanks ViOLO for uploading those files, it saved me a great deal of time. smile

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.
I'm over it!
