Question:
Is it correct to remove all the packages from you repo by manually and simply reinstall xf86-video-ati and the other packages?
What is about choose classic/gallium (I want gallium)?

Mesa DRI + Gallium3D r300 drivers for AMD/ATI Radeon

r300?! Need r600 for Radeon 5000/6000.

Hmm..don't know if that's all. But if you want to revert to the extra packages it looks like this:

xf86-video-ati-git -> xf86-video-ati
mesa-full -> mesa, libgl, ati-dri
libdrm-git -> libdrm
dri2proto-git -> dri2proto
glproto-git -> glproto
kernel-drm-radeon-testing: just keep/uninstall it and start the arch kernel.

And i don't think gallium for r600 gpus is in extra. They will use classic mesa until gallium is declared stable.

@Riko: Are you talking about the drivers from extra or from the radeon-repo?

Sir Perry3D, I would like to try new drivers from extra.
But I dont know what is better? Which you could suggest?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the package list, I compared it with my own notes and everything seem to fit.

Oh hmm
I thought the use now gallium for r600 and above. Gallium works here perfectly and is faster than classic mesa.
With Gallium I got 119 fps in IOQuake3, with classic mesa only 106.

The good news:: I reinstalled all the packages noted above and reloaded X11 on the fly.
Rebooting for loading new drivers is something for badly designed operating-systems wink

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

And I have the first problem. smile

 ~ % echo $LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH
:/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri/:/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri/

That's because of:

~ % LC_ALL=C pacman -Qo /etc/profile.d/lib32-dri.sh
/etc/profile.d/lib32-dri.sh is owned by lib32-mesa-full 20110204-1
~ % grep LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH /etc/profile.d/lib32-dri.sh
export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=$LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH:/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri/

LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH should be set to normal path by mesa-full(-gallium) before trying to append further paths with lib32-mesa(-full-gallium).

edit: Also path shouldn't end with /. It does work anyway but it's not nice reading

libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri//tls/r600_dri.so

edit: is someone able to start warcraft3 in wine with KMS? With r600c and KMS I get this garbled screen with diagonal blocks and with r600g X simply freezes completely.
With r600c and UMS it works extremely well. With r600g and UMS it's probably just rasterizer and thus very slow, but it renders correctly and doesn't freeze X. I have tested kernel26-radeon-drm-testing and kernel26-pf (=2.6.37).

btw: why is the drm-radeon-testing kernel 2.6.37-rc8?

Perry3D, thank you for this package. I was inches away from submitting this post below asking about OpenGL rendering in WINE, but installing the above and having the following LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH be this as per this (export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH="/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri_g:/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri_g") in radeon.sh

[skyalmian@alcyone ~]$ echo $LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri_g:/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri_g

fixed the issue. I'll post it anyway as a quote, in case others have this simple issue.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I know this "frame-drops" in HL1 with OpenGL from my box with fedora14, usually "export vblank_mode=0" fixes this partially.
vblank_mode=0 fix many things...

But a question: Why Direct3D? HL offers a OpenGL-Renderer (HL1 is a modified Quake1/2-Engine).

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

FPS in IOQuake3 limited after Suspend-Cycle

Could someone try this with a Mesa-Gallium r600 drivers and "vblank_mode=0":

*Play a IOQuake3 based Game (Quake3, Openarena, Urban-Terror...)
*/cg_drawfps 1
*Switch to console
*Suspend (pm-suspend)
*Resuspend
*Switch back to game

All of this works without any problem. With Classic-Mesa I got the maxium fps after the resume from suspend.
But with Gallium-Mesa my framerate is limited to 60 fps again, like vblank_mode=0 is not set.
If I restart the game-engine with /vid_restart, the framerate is at maxium again.

If you read one of my posts from friday, I switched from Gallium back to Mesa. Because driver release 6.14 doesn't offer Gallium.
Before that I always thought this issue was a problem of IOQuake3 but now I think it is caused by a bug in Gallium?

PS: I kown suspending while playing a OpenGL-Game is crazy, but THIS is my stability test for GNU/Linux. If the suspend-cycle works while playing and switching to console without blowing up my laptop everythings should be fine wink

Today it works with no problems with KMS. I think the problem was that I created a xorg.conf with X -configure and then set color tiling to enabled. I have read that it is supported on r600 now but maybe it doesn't work so good yet.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

EDIT:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forget what I said down below. I now tried the drm-radeon-testing kernel from the repo and gallium works. So apparently standard 2.6.37 is not enaugh.

But I have another problem with this kernel: Every few seconds the whole screen flashes black. It's only one (or two) frames that are black, but it is really annoying.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, now I have tested a bit. I run the pf kernel, this means 2.6.37.

Neither r600g nor lib32 r600g work for me. r600c and lib32 r600c both work. edit: I have everything from the radeon repository installed.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

@hoschi

Urban Terror is working for you ???

For me, don't show the buildings, only the player with the background image. In both Classic and Gallium !!!

Maybe is my q3config ???

Screenshoot !!

shot0003tz.th.jpg

Anyone with knowledge in GIT and PKGBUILD can help me ???

I trying to clone MESA and create a branch tracking a remote branch that apply patchs in MESA for updating some GL_ARB extensions.

In terminal work, but in PKGBUILD the same commands not work correctly !!

I Think that is fakeroot or some config that GIT take when running in PKGBUILD that make this issue !!!

In PKGBUILD i have to put an -f in git checkout command, to force and not generate errors in checkout command, but in git status show me a lot of file modified, and in terminal don't show this !!!

I try some git config commands in PKGBUILD, but it seems not work.

It is cool, this is for that @Demon show me in earlier post !!!

I don't know, but with he i think that fix some issues with compiz.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Hi all,
I got a problem when I updated all the packages for my ati graphic card.
I have done this:

pacman -S dri2proto-git glproto-git libdrm-git mesa-full mesa-demos-git mesa-full-gallium xf86-video-ati-git lib32-libdrm-git lib32-mesa-full kernel26-drm-radeon-testing linux-firmware-git

But now, I haven't any graphic acceleration:

Moreover, when I want to start a game with wine, I get this error:

I looked in the logs, but It says nothing.

Strangely, when I start a 3d application or compiz, it works !
But I get some lags with it...

Can you help me please ?
Thanks in advance for your help !

Edit: All is good now.
I reinstalled the extra packages and It works.
But I get the same error for games in wine...

Urban Terror is working for you ???

For me, don't show the buildings, only the player with the background image. In both Classic and Gallium !!!

I dont' have Urban-Terror installed. I just taken it as example for a test-environment based on IOQuake3.

No sad

I think this commit means there will be active PCI Lane reduction at some point, maybe in 2.6.39

[Phoronix] R600 Gallium3D Driver Now Supports S3TC Library.

But i don't know if it is legal to include this in the radeon repo (propably not). And you have to compile mesa after installing the s3tc lib sad .

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

>Bad performance in comparison with FreeBSD.<

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place to ask. I am a new Arch Linux user, have mostly used (and still use) FreeBSD. I have set up the drivers as described here and all works fine:

hannes@archmain ~> glxinfo | grep OpenGL
r300: DRM version: 2.7.0, Name: ATI R480, ID: 0x5d52, GB: 4, Z: 1
r300: GART size: 509 MB, VRAM size: 256 MB
r300: AA compression: NO, Z compression: NO, HiZ: NO
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI R480
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.11-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

But performance is bad compared to FreeBSD and also to a Debian I had running about a year ago. I know glxgears is not a proper bench, but a drop in FPS usually does show something. On FreeBSD (with classic mesa, as there is no Gallium) I get around 3000FPS, with the old Debian system I remember having even higher framerates.
Now with Arch and Classic Mesa I had around 700fps. With Gallium I get vsynced, so I cant say for glxgears.

Something obvious is that I have the Desktop-Cube effect in KDE turned on for switching Desktops. This runs smooth even under Load in FreeBSD, but doesn't run at all with Arch (i.e. KWin's Framerate briefly drops below 10).

Where would I start debugging this? Xorg.0.log doesnt show anything suspicious…

Thanks!

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Perry3D,

How I can compile mesa with s3tc?

http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/S3TC

On the page above there is information, that USE_EXTERNAL_DXTN_LIB=1 is required during mesa building process, but how can I use this in PKGBUILD?

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

@h2: Hi and welcome to Arch. First, you can disable vsync by setting the environment variable vblank_mode to 0.
And with a r300-r500 card i strongly recommend to use the gallium driver. It is very mature and should be fast enough.
I don't use kwin but i've read that you should disable the new blur effect.
Are you sure you used the open source driver in debian? 3000fps in glxgears is very high. Even with my HD4850 i get only 1500fps. But i can play nearly every game and compiz is very smooth.

@kfgz: I think this wiki site is not actual.
http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.p … TC-Library
Read the comments on the phoronix forum. I think the correct environment variable is R600_ENABLE_S3TC=1.

And some good news. It seems that i can compile mesa with st3c support but don't deliver the lib in the repo. So every user can install it by himself if he needs st3c support. And it doesn't hurt if the lib is not available. You just lose the st3c support.
