if you own a R600 (HD 3xxx series) now probably you are using the gallium3D based drivers instead of the classic-mesa

at least for me, this drives me to a poor performance, for example on glxgears before i got around 1600 Fps, now i got 140 Fps. anybody with the same results?, i hope the next actualization solve this for me

I'm using the drivers from Pery3D's repo, in the first post of this thread. With my HD2600 on Gallium, I'm getting around 1250, using S3TC & with vsync turned off. If on the other hand I turn S3TC off, & with vsync on, I get around 1365 fps.

Well, now I don't find it refreshing.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

IOQuake3 seems to ignore now my vblank_mode setting, which is 0. Don't know why, nothing changed (VSYNC in Quake3 is of course also disabled).
GLXGEARS runs with maximum fps.

This sucks...

<edit>
WTF? Composting must be enabled in Metacity to launch IOQuake3 without VSYNC!

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

hdhoang,

In mesa-full have libegl and libgles. Check in newest mesa-full package in the path /usr/lib.

I don't know if have to set some enviroment variable to work.

This is the part of PKGBUILD of mesa-full to configure the build.

cd "${startdir}/src/mesa-build"
    ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr \
    --with-dri-drivers=swrast,radeon,r200,r300,r600 \
    --with-dri-driverdir=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri \
    --enable-glx-tls \
    --with-driver=dri \
    --enable-xcb \
    --enable-egl \
    --enable-glu \
    --enable-egl \
    --enable-gles1 \
    --enable-gles2 \
    --enable-glut \
    --enable-glw \
    --disable-gallium \
    --disable-gallium-radeon \
    --disable-gallium-r600 || return 1

Sorry my english !!!

====================== EDIT =======================

Sorry, you mean to set the section provides in PKGBUILD.

I'm sorry !!!

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Can anyone verify (I have hd 4670) with color tiling (I need compositing for warcraft3 in wine...) that starting xterm does indeed shatters the screen or does crash X?

It only leaves

[drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

in dmesg...

It's a bit ridculous. Nexuiz with effects on ultra runs (a bit slow, but correctly) and xterm crashes X?

Sry for the late update.
But it should be fixed with the latest update from the radeon repo.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

On my HD5470, the fan spins continuously no matter what power profile I select. In High profile, the fan noise is so loud that it's impossible to operate the lappy when someone is sleeping around you (have to do it a lot of times). It gets pretty hot too. The Mid profile brings the noise and heat to more manageable levels but the spin is continuous nonetheless.
Package versions:
xf86-video-ati --> 6.14.0-2
mesa --> 7.10.1-1
kernel26 --> 2.6.37.4-1

yeah, sadly the power management is not good enough.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Aw shucks.! sad
The open source drivers have been far better then catalyst in all other aspects (I don't play games BTW).
Now I have to choose between jerk-free flash video playback, ability to resume cleanly from suspend/hibernate and less bloat on one hand compared to better power management and longer battery life on other. Choices are tough.!

Yeah, I feel your pain. I would be much happier if some developer just comment on my bug saying that it will be better at some point, but it is open since months without feedback sad

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Hey guys,

after using catalyst for a while I switched back to the radeon driver (and KDE). First with all files from extra, but no 3D acceleration. Then I installed all the git versions. Now I have 3D acceleration (theoretical):

OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on softpipe
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.11-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

The "VMware" and "softpipe" confuses me a little. Never read it or had in in the past concerning this driver

There are two problems. The native resolution of 1680x1050 ist not working. Maximum is 1400x1050. With the non-git-versions the native resolution worked.
The other thing ist, that the 3D acceleration is extremely slow (HD3200IGP). Urban Terror is not working, which does with this driver in the past.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem as Pik. It was due to the Xorg 1.10 <---> driver incompatibility. I downgraded Xorg.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I have a laptop with an intel and ati (5650) card inside. When I start x, it loads up the intel card:

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Mobile
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 7.10.1)
OpenGL extensions:

How can I make it load up the ati gallium driver? I installed the packages in the first post, but running stock kernel.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Did you also follow the this part of the OP re. Gallium?

To activate it system wide create a file in /etc/profile.d/. You can call it radeon.sh (don't forget to mark it executable: chmod +x /etc/profile.d/radeon.sh).
And add export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri_g/ to the file (append :/usr/lib32/xorg/modules/dri_g/ if you installed the lib32-mesa-full-gallium package).

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I'm using HD 6870 with 2.6.38 kernel and other [testing] packages. Tried different profiles, but nothing changed in /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/radeon_pm_info. I really hate how the GPU fan is basically silent in BIOS, GRUB, Windows, with Catalyst etc., but starts spinning very audibly a couple of seconds after radeon with KMS is loaded. Same thing happens with radeon repo driver, even if it didnt boot all the way to X.

Is there no way to control the fan with radeon drivers? Why does radeon "fix" the fan speed when that isn't broken to begin with?

Just moved to using the drivers in the repo nicely provided here, but if we are using git versions, how come we cannot use latest xorg?
Thanks

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

@gee: are you using [testing]? xorg 1.10 in there has different ABI version than [extra] (10 and 8). ProgDan's repo is compiled with [extra] so it won't run with [testing]'s xorg-server. You can check /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if ABI version is the problem.

As a temporary solution, compile xf86-video-radeon-git from AUR or ProgDan's gitorious repo.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Yes I am using testing.
I see why, that makes sense.

Also lately, but I cannot pinpoint what, after using XBMC I get my screen flickering and being all corrupted, the only solution is to restart the computer. The TTY is fine though, I thought with KMS both of them would get affected....

I moved to the git drivers and gallium3d with hope... but nothing.
It does not seem to be the latest xorg either since to use this files I have rolled back to 1.09.
Could it be the .38 kernel?

Thanks!

I have noticed

~ % cat /proc/config.gz | gunzip - | grep CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP
# CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP is not set

Could you please enable it?

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Hm, maybe not the best moment to do the update because now every GL program outputs.

EE r600_pipe.c:430 r600_get_param - r600: unknown param 45

But works anyway, so no big problem.

But still

# CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP is not set

Thank you.
I didn't check if other kernel options have good settings. Maybe it's time to merge the stock 2.6.38 config from testing but I don't really know. smile

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I upgraded on Gnome 3.0 (works fine), my problem:
Clutter/Mutter is limiting my framerate to 60fps per seconds (export vblank_mode=0, is set). I know this from Metacity, but that doesn't happend with "Compositing". How can I fix that? 60 fps are to less, my Radeon can server 140fps in Quake3.
