Re: gnome unstable repository

I have tried Gnome 3 again on clean install, had few problems and sometimes I just wasn't able to login from GDM to Gnome Shell and had some stupid popup from Gnome showing to try later but it fixed after 1 day somehow. No idea what was the cause, probably mutter/clutter or whatever it's called as seen on .xsession-errors. For now Gnome Shell is the best environment I was working with and I really like it but there are few things they need to change like this system tray on the bottom or this dock which is always hidden and it's annoying. I have also tried Fallback mode and to be honest it's nothing like Gnome 2, it has two panels and that's it - nothing can be changed and everything looks ugly so if anyone wants to use Gnome 3 then it means Gnome Shell only because this Fallback mode is the worst what happens. Now I understand why Canonical chosen to use Unity instead of Gnome 3 but I still think that Gnome Shell is much better than Unity, it's just simple and I love it. Just got few questions. How is that possible gtk2 is installed along with Gnome 3? Shouldn't that be gtk2-free environment now? Thanks.

Re: gnome unstable repository

Hi,

Gnome3 with gnome-shell was running quite good on my system but unfortunately till the last update. Now, when I start in gnome-shell it loads successful but I am not able to click anywhere or open anything. So, it doesn't react. My only chance is to hit Ctrl-Alt-Bksp and uninstall gnome-shell to use Gnome3 in the fallback mode.

Which log files or information should I provide you guys, so you can take a look over it in order to help me to continue enjoying gnome-shell?
Thanks.

Re: gnome unstable repository

for the 999999999 time in this thread. that is a known bug and is fixed upstream and it would be available for us in the next version

Re: gnome unstable repository

Editing /usr/share/applications/gnome-control-center.desktop and modifying the line :

Categories=GNOME;GTK;Settings;
to
Categories=GNOME;GTK;System;

solve the "System Settings" problem for me.

Re: gnome unstable repository

I just installed gnome 3 / gnome-shell on my laptop (macbook pro 2.1) and I have two problems:
- the keyboard layout: Macbook Pro (Intl) is not in the list of the keyboard layouts
- the touchpad doesn't work

That's the solution - it solves the problem for me too. I wonder which apps are responsible for NetworkManager and Bluetooth settings? Maybe the same trick will work for them too.

EDIT: For nm-connection-editor the trick is not working.

If this has already been asked & answered I overlooked it: Where can one access PKGBUILD's & co. used for the gnome-unstable repo?

What do you mean with deleting icons from Gnome Shell? If you mean that you do not want some icons to show up in the applications and searches panes I think you have the edit the respective .desktop files and add NoDisplay=True, see http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-a … ry.html.en

Cheers,
Alessandro

Re: gnome unstable repository

ok man thanks smile

last 2 question:

1) nautilus-open-terminal doesn't work yet...it's only my problem?

2) there's a way to hide main cateogries?? i mean...i've hide apps with NoDisplay=true but now i have 2 categories that are empty: Development and Other. I've tried with NoDisplay into /usr/share/dekstop-directories but it doesn't works...any suggestion?

Re: gnome unstable repository

hey, there's a way to use gtk2 apps with gnome3, so there's a way to use nautilus elementary. Am I right? Does it work correct?

Re: gnome unstable repository

@off220 if i remember well, nautilus elementary is a dead project and they chose to write a new file manager directly in gtk3. overall nautilus 2.91.93 is very nice compared with the old one

Re: gnome unstable repository

no, it lives on http://www.webupd8.org/2011/03/nautilus … rsion.html. But yes, only gtk2. For gtk3 they develop Marlin.

Re: gnome unstable repository

ok. from what i see, you only need to push in aur a gnome-desktop2 build on which nautilus-elemetary should depend. vte is still gtk2, libunique is still gtk2
