Well, I think I'm going for a Nokia N900 once they come out in October if the price is not too high (seems to be around 500€ without beeing imprisoned for another two years by your provider), we'll see how it works out...
I'll let y'all know how I get on with it, once I've managed to lay my hands on one of them.

I recently got a Samsung i7500 (Galaxy). It's smaller than the HTC Hero (and the n900), which fits better in a pocket. I installed a pseudo Debian on top of Android thanks to instructions at http://www.saurik.com/id/10 and it's a good deal of fun. However, don't even try to "vim" with an onscreen keyboard. I'd be glad to see Arch Mobile work on that phone.
