i just grabbed the latest code from the central repository. is this the right one to get?
i'm willing to hack at it, esp being unemployed and all : )

Depends which one is the "central" repository. I've put up a repo on Gitorious, as it's more project-oriented (than Github). I'll be using the github repo for merging and development however.
Edit: Unless you mean the current AUR, which would be at http://projects.archlinux.org/aur.git/ . Check the AUR mailing list for updates on development.

Yep, that's the one. There are a bunch of branches on my github repo that need cleaning/finishing. You could take a look at those or start on something else. API patches were recently merged in, so that might be interesting to work on.
