xorg-server-1.7.1.901-1 works for me, xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 crashes like 1.7.1

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

I've been using kde mod for few months and since a couple of weeks xorg was crashing randomly.

Yesterday (nov 12th), I reinstalled all my system (too much tests...) and I switched to LXDE to have something lighter than KDE and I wanted to install xcompmgr to have cairo-dock installed with compositing since the emulation of transparency has a lot of glitches with openbox.

I had xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 and nvidia-190.42-1 (with all the dependencies). After half hour, xorg was taking 50-90% of my cpu (2gig intel dual core). Without compisiting, it did the same thing. I rolled back to

xf86-input-evdev 2.2.5-1
xorg-apps 7.4-2
xorg-server 1.6.3.901-1
xorg-font-utils 7.4-2
xorg-server-utils 7.4-7
xorg-utils 7.4-4
xorg-xkb-utils 7.4-2
nvidia 185.18.36-2
nvidia-utils 185.18.36-1

The compositing (xcompmgr) was not fuctioning, but without compositing, the system was stable. I read about xcompmgr transparancy problems, so I installed xcompmgr-dana from aur http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22873

So far, my system is stable with this fork of xcompmgr and with cairo-dock enabled.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

I've been experiencing problems as well, first noticed w/ xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 and nvidia-190.42-(1?).  When I have those particular versions installed, I cannot properly suspend sometimes and most attempts at resuming from a suspend fail with a segfaulted X.  I downgraded to 1.7.1 and compiled my own nvidia-190.36 and now all I get is unpredictable X segfaults, but I can suspend/resume fine.

I have an nvidia quadro nvs 140m (the core is G86M).

I'm going to try the ServerFlags workaround that was posted and hope that improves things.

Suggestion: To all those that have the latest Nvidia driver and the latest Xorg-server, and have problems, try to enlighten your xorg.conf. Read the Nvidia wiki on wiki.archlinux.org.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

With xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 and nvidia-190.42-1, visiting godsoccer.com in arora (a webkit-based browser) always causes a segfault for me, with or without "IgnoreABI" on (I know this wasn't posted as a specific solution for this problem).

Edit: I still can't recover X after the segfault and must restart the computer entirely.

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

I'm considering doing a system upgrade, took a look at the forums to see what I might be getting myself into, and found this thread. Seems like it might apply to me.

I have a GeForce 6200 TurboCache video card and am currently using the nvidia 185.18.36-2 drivers and also using xorg-server 1.6.3.901-1. Issuing pacman -Syu reveals that my system is due to upgrade to xorg-server-1.7.1.901-2 and a warning is issued by the system:

warning: xorg-server will be installed before its nvidia-utils dependency

I gather from reading this thread that I would be well advised to not upgrade to the newer xorg-server--is that correct? This seems, in part, due to the fact that updated nvidia drivers for my video card are not available--is that also correct?

In any case, experimenting around with trying to cause the system to not update either the nvidia drivers or the xorg-xserver, I've come up with the following pacman command line that does, in fact, seem to keep those updates from happening:

pacman -Su --ignore xorg-server --ignore nvidia --ignore xf86-input-evdev --ignore xf86-input-keyboard --ignore xf86-input-mouse --ignore xf86-video-vesa --ignore nvidia-utils

Summary question: would it be unadvisable for me to upgrade xorg-xserver and nvidia drivers/utilities at this stage? Anyone see any potential problems the pacman command I give above might cause?

Thanks,
James

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

There will be a whole lot of other stuff, libraries etc. built against the new xorg that will get installed with that command.  i do not know if that is a problem in itself.

Thanks for your reply. From what I've gathered in reading this thread others have recently pacman -Syu'd and had X break on them. Their solution seems to have been to downgrade xorg-xserver and nvidia. If I understand correctly, they end with a functioning system that way--and also a system that seems pretty close to the one I'm talking about getting with the pacman -Syu command plus all the --ignore arguments I've given above. In short, it seems to me like if that worked for them it should work for me. But I'm still hesitant to try it without some further input (don't want to get into a big troubleshooting session at the moment). Further input?

I believe it is much more convenient to ignore packages update with pacman.conf file by adding line IgnorePkg = xorg-server ...

I got the same problem here.  X has been running smooth since I did:

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.6.3.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /va
r/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-utils-7.4-7-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

Hello,

since xorg-server 1.7.1.901-2, i get some random segfaults with kdemod3, like this :
kernel: X[1809]: segfault at 9bc5a000 ip b5c18630 sp bfaf7f20 error 4 in nvidia_drv.so[b5b82000+405000]

With kdemod4, no problem. I think it's related with ABI changes.

doh! An arch user that plays godsoccer!?  I thought I was the only one..what's your team name? lol
btw I had the same problems with webkit browser and godsoccer site causing segfault , and now seems to be solved with xorg-server 1.7.1.902-1, yay!

Sorry, I don't play godsoccer smile.  Maybe I should.  Someone earlier in the thread said that going to their website with a webkit browser would segfault xorg, and they're right.

I get a segfault with the same version as you, mangus... what version of nvidia are you using?

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

For me the new xorg-server 1.7.2-2 package doesn't change anything. I still experience the same exact symptoms I described earlier on my 64-bit/nvidia system.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but from my experience, the new xorg-server (the new xorg-server-1.7.2-2) on my 32-bit laptop fares even worse -- it hangs the system when it starts, even though this laptop is not using the nvidia drivers (it has intel integrated graphics). I was forced to stop X from starting by going into runlevel 3. I downgraded back to the same 8 packages I currently have on my 64-bit system:

xf86-input-evdev 2.2.5-1
xf86-input-keyboard 1.3.2-2
xf86-input-mouse 1.4.0-2
xf86-input-synaptics 1.1.3-1
xorg-font-utils 7.4-3
xorg-server 1.6.3.901-1
xorg-server-utils 7.4-7
xorg-utils 7.4-4
xorg-xkb-utils 7.4-2

as well as:

xf86-video-intel-2.8.1-1
xf86-video-vesa-2.2.0-1

because pacman raised conflict issues when trying to downgrade with

pacman -U xorg-server-1.6.3.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

So, it's a lingering problem on nvidia and intel platforms, on both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. hmm

Re: nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault

Rewriting xorg.confs doesn't fix (most of?) these issues, flamelab... not unless some of them require arcane tweaks you can find at the nvidia forums.  They're bugs and often result in segfaults.

Luckily, 1.7.2 works great for me.

listdata, are you only having problems with the dual-monitor setup/cpu usage, or is there something else as well?  It might not be related to nvidia at all.

So to recap, I have 2 systems: (64-bit desktop + dual monitor + xinerama + nvidia card) and (32-bit laptop + intel graphics). The problem (i.e., of upgrading xorg-server to 1.7.x) exists on both platforms. I do think that it's a xorg problem not related to nvidia -- since my laptop has the same problem (I bet if I had a second monitor on it it would behave just like my desktop did before the downgrade). By the way, on my desktop right now, I have nvidia 190.42-1 which works perfectly, but my xorg-server package is still 1.6.3.901-1 because of said issues (see my original post in this thread on page 3).

Strangely, only my 64-bit laptop (also with xf86-video-intel) is running xorg-server 1.7.x series without any problems. I don't really mind though, the problem will resolve itself in a few months, probably. And plus I don't really notice any benefits of using the 1.7.x series.

Hi

Same error for me with xorg-server 1.7.3.902-1/nvidia-utils 190.42-2 or 190.53-1
(graphic card GeForce 6800)

Do You Have Any Idea?  I must downgrade xorg to 1.6?

thanks

I did a -Syu today and everything seems OK on both systems. I did, however, change my xorg.conf on my dualscreen desktop so that the monitors/screens were swapped (0 to 1, and 1 to 0 -- just to mirror how the motherboard sees the two DVI ports on my 8800GTS card) before I upgraded, so maybe that's why it works.

EDIT: With some more googling, I've narrowed down my desktop's xinerama + dual-monitor problem to this bug: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24986 which has not been fixed yet. I only got the illusion that things were OK on my desktop after the -Syu because I switched the 0 and 1 order in my xorg.conf (but even after the -Syu, my second monitor in protrait mode still had issues).

Looks like the latest xorg server 1.7.5 fixed my issues. I'm not having any problems on any of my systems with the latest packages.

EDIT: Ugh, but now there is another bug/glitch. Nvm.
