Trouble getting printer to work

I am having trouble getting access to the network printer in my office.

I am running Openbox, if that makes a difference.

Followed the CUPS wiki to install that and associated files for a hp printer (it is a HP 1320n),  then tried starting CUPS

sudo /etc/rc.d/cups start

which seems to work.  I then run hp-setup and use manual discovery to find my printer as I know it's ip address, this seems to work, however when I try to finalise the process I get the error message

Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again.

Needless to say I have tried this and it doesn't seem to work.

I can't seem to use the CUPS online interface as when it asks for a username and password I am not sure what they should be, my username and password don't work.

As my printer is connected via a network cable I skipped the kernel section in the cups wiki as that didn't seem appropriate.

If anyone can tell me how to capture the output of whatever you get if you go to Ctrl-Alt-F1 (what is this called?) I can give the error messages that are on there.

Thanks for any help

Re: Trouble getting printer to work

When asked for a username/password, try root, that should be the default.

By Ctrl+Alt+F1 I'm guessing you mean  all the xorg output, but I think that would be irrelevent here. What would probably help more is if there are any CUPS logs in /var/log and also dmesg output.

Re: Trouble getting printer to work

Ask and you shall receive, from /var/log/cups/error_log

E [07/Jan/2010:11:30:41 +0000] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/model/foomatic-db-ppds/Kyocera/ReadMe.htm"!
E [07/Jan/2010:11:30:48 +0000] Returning HTTP Forbidden for CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer (ipp://localhost/printers/hp_LaserJet_1320) from localhost
E [07/Jan/2010:11:32:16 +0000] Unable to set ACLs on root certificate "/var/run/cups/certs/0" - Operation not supported
E [07/Jan/2010:11:32:49 +0000] [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file "/usr/share/cups/model/foomatic-db-ppds/Kyocera/ReadMe.htm"!
E [07/Jan/2010:11:32:54 +0000] Returning HTTP Forbidden for CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer (ipp://localhost/printers/hp_LaserJet_1320) from localhost

I can't find any CUPS info in dmesg, ask if you want it all though.

However using your advice to log in as root I have managed to configure the printer using the web interface, so I can print if I use the command

lpr filename

Should programs now just pick up the printer automatically or do I need to do anything else?
