have you tried running the command 'vbetool vbefp getbrightness' ?
This returned "Real mode call failed." However I can retrieve the current brightness by looking at the file /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/backlight/asus_laptop/brightness.
What about restaring HAL on resume?
I tried this; unfortunately it had no effect.

I had that same error as well, I have no idea what in pm-utils could be causing the buttons to break. However I noticed that a new version of pm-utils is out, it is possible that the error is fixed then. We just have to wait for it to enter the repos.
EDIT: noahsark1126, have you tried tuxonice ?

I'm completely stumped as well. I can't imagine any reason that something like this would work before a suspend but not after.
In any case, I think it's unfortunately unlikely that a new pm-utils will solve the problem. It seems to me to be a kernel issue.

Seeing that it is a kernel issue I'm going to try tuxonice some time in the next few days and see if the results are better. Perhaps the tuxonice project is superior.

I'd appreciate if you could try that out. I don't think I'll have any time to do it myself in the near future.
I have tried the userspace utilities (s2ram and s2disk), which required much less effort to get working than tuxonice, but there was no change.

I unfortunately cannot get tuxonice to work with arch. So for the moment there is no good solution to this problem.

Damn, that's really unfortunate. Thanks for trying it out.
We should probably file a bug report somewhere. Should it be in Arch or kernel bugs?

A bug report on our brightness buttons or on my tuxonice issues? If it's on the brightness buttons I think an Arch bug should be filed first and then if it is determined to be a kernel bug a bug can be filed upstream.

Oh I meant the brightness buttons, especially since you were only trying tuxonice as a possible resolution for that. I can file one on Arch bugs.

When you do file it please link me to it.

Alright, here we go. Sorry it took me so long.

Seems to be resolved in 2.6.33.3.
