For your fd0 message. I just tried ArchBang
on my bro's computer and had the error as well
even though fdo & floppy are disabled in modules

BUT

when I went in BIOS I saw:
Legacy Diskette A: 1.44M, 3.5in even though he doesn't have a floppy drive lol
changed it to
Legacy Diskette A: Disabled

Problem solved big_smile

Even though we disabled floppy in modules, if in your BIOS floppy isn't disabled, it will think you have floppy

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

Booted new 104 64bit in 37 secs(corrected the fd0 problem) but still have no stable USB audio.

In Arch builds there are ways to correct audio discrepancies but with Live boots ,ro, the possibilities disappear.

I assume that the alsa audio system is up-and-ready at desktop and should display correct USB mixer (pcm).  But it doesn't always do so(seldom is the word).

The difference in normal mixer setup and USB mixer setup is a zero or a one.  The criteria for such a selection is extremely fault sensitive.

I used the term ....snd-usb-audio....as the fix in rc.conf MODULES when running into difficulties.

The actual performance on the desktop shows the audio icon with a red x when the mixer is set correctly to USB during the boot.

Right click on the audio icon when it has no red x gives a window which allows selection of alsa or oss.  If oss is selected, the redx appears on the desktop icon.  The mixer display when selected, does not show USB pcm mixer selection but shows the full alsa mixer.

Selection of USB mixer following F6 does not provide audio via USB.

Many hours chasing this difficulty and several versions affected.

When it correctly connects to USB mixer, sound is great and I can move the USB audio device (dongle) from port to port with no problem.

If I select F6 and select USB mixer, the mixer (pcm) opens.  In the event this is done with the audio icon not displaying a red x, I receive an error signal when the dongle is removed.  Thus, the USB device is recognized but the audio signals are missing.

Perhaps the whole shebang is muted?  But why?

The audio is sometimes available but very seldom...unpredictable!

Perhaps the problem is in /proc/asound

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

@lilsirecho

This will be very difficult for me test since I don't use USB audio here.
So how do you usually fix this isue with Arch? Just put "snd-usb-audio" in MODULES array? Please tell me the exact procedure that you use to fix this issue with Arch that would help us correct the issue in AB1.05 smile

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

Shylock;

Thanks for the changes and your offer to make another.

I usually place in rc.conf MODULES as the first item ...snd-usb-audio .

I cannot guarantee this will fix it since other elements may be required such as daemons.

The weird thing is how it can work some of the time.

I note that the mixer volume tab on the task bar doesn't respond...shows zero but the mixer display is 90%.

All channels are unmuted and respond to 'm" key which toggles each mixer item.

This m control also works when using the USB mixer via F6 selection parameters.

I am hoping to catch it working before I go to bed and see if it is in alsa mixer or OSS.

My test vehicle is VLC and I have many avi and flv files for testing.  The video is fine but no audio.

I do not wish you to make a special effort to include the suggested change.

I have lotsa time on my hands at age 84 but not a lot of time yet to go!!!!

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

Shylock;

It came up in USB mode just now and the icon has a red "x" and selecting mixer shows USB PCM mixer with the top caption ALSA MIXER.

The VLC media plays the avi and flv files video and audio with this boot.

I have intel mobo 945gcm s2c which has legacyUSB selected in bios to enable boot from usb.
As I post this, the icon remains showing a red "x".

Boot time is really fast at 37 seconds.

I note some variation in that parameter if I reboot using the desktop option.

Sometimes the log-in prompt holds for several seconds, then there is a long delay before the welcome display which then disappears for a long spell before returning to complete the Desktop but without the USB audio (almost everytime).

This seems related to the legacyUSB setup in my opinion since it provides a USB enablement prior to the boot prompt.

This USB performance has been a bugaboo with this machine.

Dunno if it is peculiar to only this one.

I recall having to do the fix on an i686 machine from asus.

My lcd has USB 2.0 ports which enable me to disable the audio, keyboard and mouse by hitting the lcd off button.  This works fine in my archx86_64 USB HDD boot up with no audio problems.

I have tried all possible hookups for the USB audio dongle since I have eight USB ports.

At this time I will disconnect the dongle and then reconnect it to observe the icon "x".....

The icon is undisturbed and the mixer is still USB PCM.

So the connection is solid.

I have hiopes to find a way around this...no audio is a real bummer!!!!

Sure pleased with your efforts...both of you.

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

According to the wiki:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Adv … ound_Cards

Does modprobe snd-usb-audio make any difference?

It'd be helpful if someone else with USB audio card checks if it works for them.

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

How far have you got with installer? not an easy thing to do... would work if you were transplanting Archbang system to new machine [saves dragging in packages for initial set up]

Along the lines:

User sets up drive gparted or cfdisk..

Create mount points

Install Archbang [less /dev etc]

Allow user to edit key files

Bootloader

Hope I have not missed anything out

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

Here's what I'm thinking:

- Launch the installer as root.
- Remove options for "select source" and "select packages"
- Let the installer do what it does with prepare and partition hard
  drives
- Install packages with rsync [or cp whichever is a better option!] the live cd excluding proc,sys,dev and
  then install kernel and grub explicitly to the target machine!
- Fstab will be removed from ${DESTDIR} and  new fstab will be written
  using auto_fstab as arch does!
- After configuring the system we automate an external script for adding user  and password,etc.

I'm tweaking the /arch/setup script directly [zomg 1433 LOC!! lol!]. The real problem is time, both me and Will are busy with irl issues for a while.

Any help is appreciated. smile

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

@.:Mr Green:.
As you had suggested we are going to use cfdisk like Arch does and remove gparted, or maybe keep it as an option as a GUI tool to partition drives is always nice and helpful in some cases. We are not going to use any GUI frontend for the installer, it will be against "The Arch Way" and the installer will be plain ncurses based arch installer.

EDIT: All these are obviously subjected to change as we get feedback and suggestions. This is just what we have thought of right now.

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

Yet another "thank you!"

Running 1.04 and I'm very impressed.  While I loved the #! philosophy and look, I was determined never to use anything with an Ubuntu base again.  The "#! on a Debian Testing base" discussion on the#! forum really intrigued me.  However, I wasn't up to doing all the Openbox config work so I just installed Debian Testing with vanilla LXDE (Openbox-based).  That gave me the confidence to do the same with my ultimate goal: Arch.  I figured I'd dump LXDE for a #!-like Openbox someday.

I was just about to do it when ArchBang came along.  Woo-hoo!!!

FWIW, my preferences are to stick with "The Arch Way" and KISS.  While an installer would certainly be nice, I'd be happy enough doing a base Arch install myself and then run an install script to add the minimum ArchBang package set and config files.  A list of suggested light-weight apps on the ArchBang wiki page would be the icing on the cake.  Probably would be significantly simpler and quicker than debugging a full installer.

Whatever, thanks again for the hard work!  big_smile

Bonus: 139 MB RAM running Chromium and posting to the forum.  I've got this very old machine that would be improved considerably with ArchBang.

D00d get your code out there.... plenty of horny hackers here...

arch/setup script is the way to go tried and tested

understand about fstab

would loading kernel after cause any issues? use what you got then pacman -Syu update in running system

jury is out on gparted lets face it with a working connection just load it from Archbang [the ultimate portable Arch based system]

I am here for testing, spiritual guidance and tea making...

@kgas
You downloaded 1.03 whereas 1.04 is released.
Netcfg was recently removed due to a suggestion. It will be included in next release as clearly wicd doesn't work for many!

@MrG

Ok I'll upload the script here [as soon as I get some stuffs done! lol] for open-hacking. This will speed up the development process. If any one is eager to help you can check out the /arch/setup script [from 2009.02 installer! not 2009.08!] and try modifying it according to the requirement list I posted in Post #136

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

Shylock;
modprobe snd-usb-audio did not produce sound.

Examining the alsa details in my arch HDD I find alsa-lib in addition to alsa-oss and alsa-utils.

My HDD x86_64 is more complex than archbang...kde4 controls the audio.  It works fine in kde.
I have an alsa daemon in rc.conf.

Mr.Green;

My normal audio out from the mobo has no audio either.

Using USB cable reduces my interface to one USB cable for audio, mouse and keyboard all subject to the LCD being "on" since it has  four USB ports.  Turning off LCD with power button lets the computer download without restricting my activities on the desk.

Audio is the big bugaboo in Linux......

digit;

Log in as root...

ctl-alt-F1
enter :root
enter: passwd
enter ;new password
enter; new passwd again
ctl-alt-F7

This sets up a password for root.  When in "live" terminal...
Enter ..su root
enter password

You are now in root.

Alternatively, use thunar root mode by right click in thunar root window and select..... root terminal.

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

@ MrG

So far basically what I have changed is, remove the section in fuction installpkg() and add:

installpkg() {
    # Copy Live Medium
  mkdir ${DESTDIR}/{bin,boot,dev,etc,home,lib,mnt,opt,proc,root,sbin,srv,sys,tmp,usr,var}
  rsync -a / ${DESTDIR}/ --exclude=/{dev,sys,proc,media,src}/
  pacman -U -f $kernel -r ${DESTDIR} --noconfirm
  pacman -U -f $grub -r ${DESTDIR} --noconfirm

  S_INSTALL=1

    # automagic time!
    # any automatic configuration should go here
    DIALOG --infobox "Writing base configuration..." 6 40
    auto_fstab
    auto_network
    auto_locale
}

Maybe insanely stupid, but will see if this actually works.

Then added and removed a few parts from here and there,like the "select source" , we don't need it as the source is obviously the Live CD and removed "select packages" as we only install what we have!

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

Anyone;;

If the mkinitcpio hooks were changed to include ..mdadm..

Would an entry of raid array(s) via mdadm,/etc/mdadm.conf and mkinitcpio-p kernel26 provide a mdadm raid array that assembles during ArchBang boot sequence?

This assumes the array has been assembled and the proper scan performed to recognize the array in /etc/mdadm.conf.

Setting up a mdadm array is correctly done in ArchBang but mdadm hook is needed to allow boot assembling.

Re: ArchBang 2.00 RC1

@ MrG

absetup-alpha

Warning please be aware that anyone who wants to use the script for testing please note, it's not going to work ootb with the present ArchBang live CD! It's very hackish and must be installed in a VM only for testing!
1. You need to create a directory /src/pkgs [or whatever]
2. Put kernel and grub packages there
3. You need stuffs not included in Live CD like grub,rsync and zenity [maybe removed by editing first line of code, though it's a nice thing to have it!]

Does anyone have an idea if after you install grub package, the /usr/lib/grub packages are automatically copied over? For now I used:

cp -rp /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/* $DESTDIR/boot/grub/

This script is still not complete and a lot of cleaning up is needed!
A feature I'd like to add is "Check Install CD", but that can wait. For now, we need to make sure if the idea works!  Please email me for any changes!
