Hello. I have the same problem. I installed rhythmbox, and it didn't started, saying that libpng12.so.0: cannot openshared object file. i did pacman -Sy libpng and now kde is not starting for the same reason, even after i have reinstalled it

Florin - you need to update your whole system with pacman -Syu, you shouldnt install a single package with pacman -Sy, it can end up with things getting out of sync.
Update your entire system, and then if you still have problems, post which applications are giving you the problems.

i have updated the system with pacman -Syu, and now nothing works anymore. it is not responding to anything except power button. The last thing i see is starting modules

I would boot from a live cd, mount your current installation, and get a list of the packages that you updated from the pacman log (/var/log/pacman.log), the post that to pastebin and link to it here. If the breakage was caused by an update, that should narrow down the list of culprits to check on.

You should read the developers public mailing list. They have been doing a huge amount of work recompiling/repackaging every app that depends on libpng, and it has been at least a month in the planning. It's not a bug, as far as I know, everything in the repos have been recompiled for libpng 1.4, it's only thinngs in aur, like cairo-lcd, and aur/chromium.

I've got exactly the same problem. Here is my log: http://pastebin.ca/1788386
I've installed the system today. Since installation f.e. Amarok didn't work because of the lack of libpng.8. Now I can't use Amarok, Dolphin, Kate, etc. - everything says
error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I cannot do pacman -Syu, because there's a problem with dependencies. What should I do? Please, help.

I had to install lib32-libpng12, because I have x86-64. I've installed yaourt and then, using yaourt, lib32-libpng12. I've tried to make pacman -Syu, but there's still problem with dependencies.
---
Ok, i've just changed the ('i686') to ('x86_64') in the file and installed libpng12 by yaourt.
Amarok
<unknown program name>(11358)/: KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: "/usr/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: No protocol specified
Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed."
<unknown program name>(11357)/: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.
and Kate
kate: cannot connect to X server :0.0
still don't work, but Dolphin works. I still can't do the pacman -Syu. What should I do now?...

What daemons do you load? Can you paste the daemons line of your rc.conf?
The problem might be dbus not being loaded. What do you seen when you type:
ps aux|grep dbus
If you see nothing then dbus isn't running, in this case, type
$ sudo /etc/rc.d/dbus/start
and try it again.
If you are using hal, and load it in your daemons list then it should load up dbus. If you don't use hal then you need to include dbus in your daemons list.
You can also check your logs to see if anything is there related to dbus.
Also, why can't you do pacman -Syu? What dependency issues do you have?

I had similar problem with AUR package Qnapi (it's a client for downloading subtitles, very handy) - it didn't start complaining about libpng2 lib. I had to rebuild it and now it works fine.

really not a bug? then why kde require libpng12 after pacman -Syu? the only thing i did was pacman -Sy libpng because i wanted to try rhythmbox. And now i can't use my computer anymore. I will reinstalll from scratch, but this will be my last Arch experience if this kind of problem will arise again. This is not the first time when i have this kind of problems.

if you isntall libpng12 from aur you still have problems FlorinM? recompile cairo
if you dont like arch, I guess you dont have you dont have to use it.. no one forces you..linux is about choice, so does arch

I can't install libpng from Aur, because it is something that crashes and i can't boot (not even in level 3).
I do like Arch, that's why i'm still trying... but it's the third time when i have to reinstall

Had the same problem with splashy. libpng12 and libjpeg7. New versions are libpng14 and libjpeg8 in usr/lib.
Had to ( for splashy ) update /lib/initcpio/install/splashy manually, e.g. change the old version numbers.
Then I ram mkintcpio -p kernel26 again and it worked.
Maybe this helps to find the track to solve problems with other software as well.

i have reinstalled from scratch and it still don't boot.
There is another problem now, i think. It works, but i don't see anything on the screen. But if i type 'root', then password, and then 'reboot', it will reboot. I had problems before with the driver and Xorg (i have intel 82852/855GM), but now i don't even have Xorg. The screen becomes black after "waiting for udev... etc"

Well, after restarting the machine (I switched it off, when I was coming to sleep) - surprise! - Amarok works. So does Kate and the others apps. I think package from AUR helped. But it was for 32-bit, as I've written earlier, and I've installed it on 64-bit, hm. Yet it works... for now. I don't know how, but - works.
Also, why can't you do pacman -Syu? What dependency issues do you have?

It's since installing of the system (which I've done yesterday). Please, tell what to do. After the installation of system, I only did what Arch Wiki tells. I choose Chakra, not 'clean' Arch to spare some time, but now I am not sure, if it was a good decision; maybe I should install Arch and do everything on my own. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of session on university and I just need working system :-/ I like Arch and don't want to change it, but don't know what can I fast do with this problem with dependencies.

@hibana
Personally I find it easier to start with a clean system. There's less chance for confusion and dependency hell since I know what I install bit by bit. Having said that, whatever works for you, use it.
First you need to get the latest version of broadcom-wl from AUR, any of the AUR Helpers can be used to build and install it, but Yaourt is probably the easiest for you to use.
Next remove nvidia-utils and nvidia as root
# pacman -R nvidia-utils nvidia
and then try to update xorg-server, and afterwards reinstall nvidia and nvidia-utils, it's also useful to install the vesa driver or nv driver in case you have problems with the official driver.

as I allready said before FlorinM, boot with a live cd.. mount the partition and then chroot.. there you will be able to install from AUR and do everything else
