The ArchMetal theme i created contains no config to display text - if you have edited this file yourself to display text then you did it wrong! AFAIK if a cfg has no text config in it then the boot message is not shown

Hi,

Just wanted to say, that I am also getting the error seen in screenshot nr. 1, when using ArchMetal, but not when using darch theme.

I think, that bootsplash2fbsplash conversion could be the problem. Maybe it generates some not-very-compatible configs? Was DangerGirl theme converted with bootsplash2fbsplash (I think so, as I have not found native fbsplash theme) and maybe ArchMetal was somehow based on some kind of older (depreciated) configs?

Just my thoughts.

OK! Tried it in silent and reproduced the error. Did a quick fix with rensel's text config from darch and included the font file in the archive new version is now on the server at the same location - thanks for pointing it out.

I'll try to add something into the scripts to avoid the error message

is there any way we can somehow integrate the gensplash initscripts into the mainstream arch init scripts?

i know they should be kept as clean as possible.. but i dont see why we cant introduce generic `hooks'..

im not a bash scripter so some of this may not be possible..

i was thinking that.. when the init scripts start..
- they check for the existance of some kind of `hook' file..
this `hook' file has to have certain functions that allow communication between the init scripts and whatever program / s are listening..
- if it finds the file, then it uses the functions defined there in,
ie, daemonStart, daemonFinish, totalNumDaemons.. etc
this allows for the silent bootsplash % bar and other notification if needed.
- when a service / demon is started / finished loading, it calls a function in the `hook' file..

this script would then call the specific functions related to that `hook's job.
in this case, gensplash functions.

essentially the initscripts-gensplash would provide a `hook' file and also the package would provide an `initscripts-hook' value so that pacman would detect a conflict with other programs if they tried to overwrite the `hook'..

like i said, im not sure if thats do-able..
but im just really keen to see the gensplash initscripts being put into the mainstream so that you dont have to keep maintaining them..
then again youve probably thought of all these things before..

Pretty much

It's actually easier than ever to integrate them thanks to /sbin/splash. If you look at the initscripts gensplash patch you can see that most of the patching is required in functions to actually update the status bar. This patching, AFAI can see, is unavoidable without a complete re-write

I have heard that Arch has BSD style initscripts, which makes them very simple and transparent and, when you compare it to say gentoo's initscripts, i think i know which way i prefer them

just installed the -cko2 kernel from aur and now i've been playing around with gensplash too. only problem seems to be some strange error message that pops up about a division by zero in /sbin/splash on line 223. everything works, but this can be seen in verbose mode along with a few other /sbin/splash errors i can't read before the screen scrolls. i'll try and get some info posted when i finally figure out what the first few errors are.

oh yeah, i also have /usr separate from / and had to follow the procedure posted on the previous page to get rid of a few other messages.

also, i love the darch theme!

I followed the wiki and I'm having some trouble.
I used kernel 2.6.13-rc1 with this patch fbsplash-0.9.2-r4-2.6.13-rc1.patch
I ran

splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-theme-1024x768 -r 1024x768 darch

which gave me
fbsplash-darch-1024x768
I enabled ram disk support.
I setup grub like this

title  Arch Linux  2.6.13-RC1 Splash Verbose
root   (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage-2.6.13rc1  root=/dev/hda1 devfs=nomount vga=773 splash=verbose,theme:darch console=tty1
initrd /boot/fbsplash-darch-1024x768

root   (hd0,0)

ah - whoops! i think that means that gensplash should depend on the initscripts-gensplash pkg!

Funny that that has never come up before - I am considering doing a slight rejig of gensplash and i'll fix this then

If you want to fix that you'll need to install the initscripts-genplash pkg too

As dibblethewrecker said initscripts-gensplash is needed
and for my issue on genpslash not loading my color bit was to low in grub. I had to make it 16mill colors. Now all works
