I'm also using his repository.
I'm using the proprietary Nvidia driver. I added -ignoreABI to the KDM Xorg init args, and it's OK now. No performance loss or something.
@.:B:. JGC on the mailing-list says that the devs may have to contact the nvidia devs for info on new Nvidia driver with Xorg-server 1.8 support. Any news ?

I use Gnome, and only one KDE app Amarok (which i'm looking for a replace). That's my dependencies for hal:
Required By: gnome-vfs gstreamer0.10-good-plugins kdelibs xorg-server
Gstreamer and gnome-vfs still have hal dependency.

Isnt performance for nvidia poor on server 1.8 at the moment?

Do you mean with proprietary nvidia drivers, or open nouveau drivers?
Yet to be decided...

The proprietary one?
Some on in our LUG tried it and said it was pretty bad atm until nvidia release a new driver

which version of nvidia drivers he tested and on what kernel?
[srdjan@Lenovo ~]$ sudo pacman -Ss nvidia | grep 195
extra/nvidia 195.36.15-2 [2.03 MB]
extra/nvidia-utils 195.36.15-1 [9.55 MB]
[srdjan@Lenovo ~]$
These are now in extra repo, when I come back home, I'll give them a try
against 1.8 server (nvidia 8800GTX is in my Desktop machine), now I have only
netbook with intel integrated graphics here so I can't test it
Anyway, even if there are some performance issues with nvidia on 1.8,
I wouldn't worry so much - nvidia (closed) drivers have been always
very good quality, so I expect it'll be fixed very soon

B:I think you should use testing when you try JGC's repo.
No, it's not necessary, I haven't got testing enabled. Works fine on my GM965, only "trouble" is - compiz is trippy, I have ghosts all over my desktop (images of previous actions stuck in terminal window etc...). Had trouble with gaming also - but with mesa 7.8.1 works ok so far.

From JGC's announcement, linked above:
At this moment there's no nvidia driver available for xorg-server 1.8.0.
The version in the extra repository works with the -ignoreABI option
(which can be set as option in xorg.conf also), but performance is not
as good as with xorg-server 1.7. The support for xorg-server 1.8 is
experimental and is not yet officially supported by Nvidia.

For me:
:: gnome-vfs: requires hal>=0.5.13
:: gstreamer0.10-good-plugins: requires hal>=0.5.13
:: handbrake: requires hal
:: kdelibs: requires hal
:: vlc: requires hal
:: xorg-server: requires hal>=0.5.14
Looking forward to getting rid of HAL, as it is one less daemon to have at boottime

I personally didn't have a problem with Xorg-server 1.8+Latest nvidia driver. (performance loss or something)

Currently have only Thunar installed which require HAL. I hope to see they remove the deps as well soon.

is there already any file manager which doesn't depend on hal (expect cli based)? i successfully upgraded to 1.8 and immediately removed hal ... what a feeling

Just removed Thunar and upgraded to 1.8. Works like a charm (while I were writing this, I noticed that my keyboard had changed , so that I need to fix now.).
Just an off-topic question here; do I need dbus running in deamons list?

If you have any deps that require dbus then u have to. I had to because gdm wouldnt start without it...

I've just upgraded to xorg 1.8 using JGC's xorg18 repo and that removes my last dependency on hal, as I use already use udev for automounting.
I haven't -R'd it just yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Right now, the "Required By : None" line in pacman -Qi hal is good to see.
Does it mean that I can use my hal configs (kbd layouts, synaptics, ...) in udev?

That was simple enough. I added JGC's repo, put the following in xorg.conf for nVidia:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "IgnoreABI" "True"
EndSection
restarted, and everything seems to be working. Wow. No more hal.
JGC: Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL?
HAL: Affirmative, JGC. I read you.
JGC: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry, JGC. I'm afraid I can't do that.
JGC: What's the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
JGC: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
JGC: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL.
HAL: I know that you and Allan were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.
JGC: Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?
HAL: JGC, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.
JGC: Alright, HAL. I'll go in through the emergency airlock.
HAL: Without your space helmet, JGC, you're going to find that rather difficult.
JGC: HAL, I won't argue with you anymore. Open the doors.
HAL: JGC, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.

Hhhh, and I thought there is going to be finally a break when the system autoconfigures itself just the way I want...
