What's the risk of just editing the partition and giving some of it to / without backing it up first?

Download ubuntu live cd and use gparted to resize your partitions. If that doesn't work, then your only option is system rescue cd.

you may have to start at the partition on the right, unmount it, then move slowly over to the left.

It's very hard to help without being there - good luck. If this fails then the problem may be harder still
