You can find the driver since two days ago, packaged, into our adslgr64 repo.

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

I upgraded to xorg 1.8 from the xorg18 repo, and installed the nvidia-beta driver from AUR, can confirm it worked without problems.

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

All of this looks pretty awesome. But what's wrong with HAL in the first place? I use it all the time to auto-mount devices in combination with halevt from the AUR. Is there a better way? I'm just getting the impression that some people are very keen on getting rid of HAL, and I can't help wondering why. I'll stick to my current setup until of course Xorg-1.8 and the new Nvidia driver pop-up in the core/extra repos.

It's a pain to configure, it's slowing becoming unmaintained, and worst of all, udev could already do almost everything hal could, which makes it largely unnessecary to have on your system in the first place.

So that means writing udev rules is the only possibility of getting stuff like auto-mounting done without HAL? That is if HAL becomes deprecated anytime soon...

Will this prerelease version driver be in arch testing repo some day?

It will most likely be out of pre-release state before xorg18 hits testing.

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

xorg18 group ONLY via pacman - testing possible.

Thrilled with xorg18 and uninstall of HAL. Working great.  SO: sorry to be asking as I've not looked for answer my best.

OK... I will change pacman.conf from  [xorg18]   to [testing]

So... as I need/want   ONLY the xorg18 stuff what's the pacman tip for getting just the xorg18 packages.
I could install every package manaully which is fine though I
I'm thinking there may be a  group ONLY command for pacman WITH testing ON.

The above's a bit fuzzy. Basically need xorg18 from testing nothing else from testing.
Happy to install each of the packages I need after doing pacman -Syu wth test on, then turn it off after update.

whew! :) all great!

UPDATE COMMENT: I just went full testing. Got new vim and nvidia plus xorg18 updates.! thanks!

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

I installed xorg 1.8 from [testing] today, plus the nvidia driver from the same repo. Erverything worked fine. But when I take hal out of the daemons array the internet ist not working (using wicd). Seems like a couple of apps and programs still need hal, is that correct? (went back to xorg 1.7 afterwards adding hal to the daemons section again).

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

don't forget to add dbus to your daemons. Stuff still depends on that(like wicd).
(HAL usually booted dbus by itself, that's why it's failing if you don't add it seperatly when removing hal)

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

Yes, hal isn't/wasn't only used by xorg. Before removing it, check pacman -Qi hal to see what still depends on it.

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

thanks...replacing hal with dbus as daemons works for me...a "pacman -Rcsn hal" or "pacman -Qi hal" gives me a lot of programs that still need it like; Thunar, kdenlive, k3b, orage, vlc, so I better just take it out of the daemons array. (I use Openbox)

Edit: k3b doesn't work if I don't have hal startet (it can't find the cd-rom-drive then)...vlc, kdenlive and orage seem to work though

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

I replaced thunar & vlc with pcmanfm2 from AUR, and mplayer, could remove HAL then, but it's not really a solution, was more to see if I could get rid of it. There's still the automounting left (autofs, but that doesn't work all that handy in my opinion).

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

@Kodama: I think you're misunderstanding how HAL and D-Bus interact. One is not a replacement for the other, and no one ever claimed that Xorg dropping HAL as a dependency automatically meant it would just go away entirely.

Busata wrote:

I'm wondering why someone hasn't written a daemon similar to skvm but dependent on udev instead of HAL. I'm slowly working my way towards this end, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone beats me to it with finals and projects due in the next few weeks.

It hasn't been rebuilt yet. An actual upgrade will be needed rather than just a plain rebuild, since the current version of nouveau doesn't compile against the new X stack.

You can still use the old one if you set IgnoreABI in xorg.conf - that's what I'm doing now:

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "IgnoreABI" "on"
EndSection

Edit: nouveau has been upgraded, and you don't need this hack anymore.

Re: Upgraded to Xorg1.8

now that it made it into testing: my results,
intel 2.11 drivers
xorg 1.8
mesa 7.8.1

- CTRL-SHIFT-N on gnome-terminal drops a new terminal with the old terminal's information in it (and hung). using the mouse: file-new terminal - 0.default works though...
- logging out crashes to a non-blinking cursor. SYSRQ-REISUB works
- glxgears jerks, 30ish fps (compositing and the rest works, sometimes it jumps and skips a few frames)

$  glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately 1/1936613746 the monitor refresh rate.
287 frames in 5.0 seconds = 57.354 FPS
290 frames in 5.0 seconds = 57.845 FPS
291 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.096 FPS

right now its syncing to 60fps (which is correct), but a few minutes ago, it locked at 30ish.

intel GMA945 here.

anyone got any input on these errors?

udev is already running as a daemon, no need for another one. Just write some rules - the wiki has the details.
