To the people with missing TTYs, what graphics drivers are you using?

I'm using the

xf86-video-radeonhd

driver.

Chris.

Re: [SOLVED] No TTY's available after new install.

chris, go for the ati one and if that doesn't work try catalyst. botzoboy, try catalyst and see how whether that brings any improvements.

Re: [SOLVED] No TTY's available after new install.

My old video card (ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]) from my old ThinkPad T42 is not working with catalyst.

Many thanks. Is it just a case of using pacman to install ati and remove radeonhd, then restart X?

I'm new to Arch and am used to GNU/Debian, so just checking.

Thanks,

Chris.

Well, I am not accustomed to such state of the art hardware being a T41 owner myself, but you will find that the xf86-video-ati-git driver in the AUR will serve you amazingly well (I have the same video card).

chris

There is a myriad of possibilities open to you. Yes, that would work, you could also just install the new one, rmmod the old driver, modprobe the new one and restart kdm/gdm/xdm/slim/etc... Not sure what you have to do if you have an xorg.conf, mind... Change driver there as well? Or simply rename it for testing's sake...

I installed the ati driver using pacman, and then tried to do

rmmod radeon

I was told that the module was in use, so wanting to test the proposed solution, I removed the radeon package and for the sake of ease, restarted my Arch box.

I am pleased to report that I know have TTY's. I did an lsmod to see whether radeon as being used and it did seem to be listed. I could be using the wrong command, though. The reality is that I now have TTY's, so I'm happy.

Many thanks for your guidance, botzoboy.

Chris.
