[Solved] courier-imap has stopped working - And Apache

Courier-imap has been working fine for months but overnight it just stopped working.

It starts up fine, nothing bad in the logs but then it doesn't respond to any IMAP commands.

Watching packet traces the 3 way handshake all happens ok but then the server never responds to the CAPABILITY request.

The setup is a home office, nothing between the server and client. testing with different clients and also running clients on the server itself all fail. All that has changed is a pacman upgrade last night and a reboot. The following packages were upgraded but none seem to be related to imap.

I've tried rebooting, restarting the demons but it just doesn't work. Please help!

I've just noticed that imaplogin is now running at 100% cpu, it is obviously trying to do something but I don't know how to find out what.

More testing shows that if I run
/usr/sbin/imaplogin /usr/bin/imapd Maildir

I do get a valid imap connection which allows me to login etc.

So, I have a port that listens and will allow connections, I have a working imap server behind it but for some reason the two are not tied together.

But... If I telnet to 143 imapd does log that it has a connection.

Just realised that apache is suffering from the same problem. doesn't matter if I start it from apachectl or from the init scripts. The child processes start up as normal but as soon as you connect to one it goes to 100% cpu and then refuses to die, even from a kill -9 . I've checked and xinetd isn't involved. The processes all seem ok and the port is open and listening it just all dies when you make a connection to it.

squid, nfs and ssh are ok so networking in general can't be too broken.

Please help!
