Another update of Xorg, anyone got weird problems such as freezing?

Well I went to do a system upgrade check just to see that there was a new version of xorg, 1.6.1.901-1. Has anyone had any problems with this version like 1.6.1, such as the system freezing when trying to exit an X Session started up by xinit?

I'm waiting to see if I should upgrade xorg or not because of the freezing I had with 1.6.1.

Is it possible to upgrade, test it yourself and downgrade if the setup proves unstable?

Yes. It's just I'm the middle of something as of now and can't do it until I'm done hmm I also have the old pkgs on my computer in a folder.

Sure, you can always ask for info, but I was wondering why not "just do it".

Ah, okay. I usually test it myself if I'm not in the middle of anything.

seems stable enough for me, feels like it starts up faster too but i havent timed it yet. my wireless mouse stoped lagging when its too close to the usb recever (logitech G7). but that might just be a coincidence

Okay. Everything seemed to lag for me the last time I used 1.6.1 plus the freezing fact.

Re: Another update of Xorg, anyone got weird problems such as freezing?

I'm not noticing any difference aside from Ctrl-Alt-Backspace not working again, and I have DontZap disabled in xorg.conf.

EDIT: Everything X-related is now a little faster.

Yes, depending on the settings in your pacman.conf, the old version
will likely be located in /var/cache/pacman/pkg. For instance, I just
upgraded and I have both of the following in that directory.

- xorg-server-1.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
- xorg-server-1.6.1.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Thus I could revert to the old one with:

sudo pacman -U \
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

To be honest, this one fixed most of the problems I'd been having in the older version. Compiz is smooth again.

yep, the dontzap option through xorg.conf does not work, maybe a fdi option file is now required?

Don't rush into an upgrade if you  don't have some time, I  used catalyst 9.5 from aur
and I couldn't even start KDE4. Hardfreeze before the login screen even came up.
Haven't even tried to solve it.

Working good with radeonhd.

Re: Another update of Xorg, anyone got weird problems such as freezing?

I wouldn't rush into it either! I just upgraded after reading this, and all hell broke loose! xorg was crashing for no reason! I figured out it had something to do with hotplugging, which has been working fine for me for almost a year. So I disabled that, and had to install the correct keyboard and mouse drivers xf86-input-(keyboard or mouse). Anyway it frustrated the hell out of me at 12 am AM when I wanted to watch a movie and sleep, and now 2 hours later after reading through logs and try to revert xorg server (which didn't work for some reason, it just crashed all the time) and finally reconfiguring the whole thing with the nvidia thing (that was b4 I read the log and figured out my xorg.conf was fine >_<)... not to mention straining my eyes looking on my tiny G1 cell screen at the arch wiki and forums!

sorry I had to vent.

All is well now. I have a quick question though. do I still need the xf86-input-endev driver if I have the others?

EDIT: this must be what happed (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=72819)

Re: Another update of Xorg, anyone got weird problems such as freezing?

After the last update I have something very strange - slim starts normally, I can type my login and password, but when I press Enter after typing pass, Xorg hangs - I can press CTRL-ALT-F1 to log onto terminal but slim hangs. When I am killing slim and after starting new one, the situation is the same. In my logs (most probablly slim.log, I am not sure now) I have No protocol specified error. Anyone knows a quick fix for that or is downgrading my only solution?

cheers,
praavDa.

Catalyst 9.5 working here with an updated system big_smile

I had the same problem, but now is working ok

1 - This one is the most important, delete the /etc/ati folder,

2 - Install the driver,

3 - My old xorg.conf doesn't work, so I created a new one,

4 - Enjoy wink

Re: Another update of Xorg, anyone got weird problems such as freezing?

ive realized today the following:

xorg with my laptop LCD @ 1280*800 works perfectly.

xorg with my external LCD (vga output) @ 1680x1050 works perfectly

xorg with a flat tv (vga output) @ 1280x768 freezes xorg after a couple of minutes (computer is not frozen, xorg stops drawing windows, mouse works ok), doing ctrl-alt-f1 and back fixes it for another minute or so... mplayer fullscreen dies. too.

intel 950gm graphics, latest drivers from repo installed.

Thanks a bunch mate. I was having the same trouble on my wife's laptop. I don't update it as frequently as my box, so sometimes I have these problems a couple of weeks after everyone else smile
I was stumped, there were no errors by which i could even diagnose what the problem was. I tried reinstalling catalyst, but i didn't do step 1, which turns out the be most important as you stated wink

thx again big_smile
