[SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

Hello!

After update my KDE (not KDEmod) the Xorg server runs after a few minutes with 100% cpu usage. I'm using the stable nvidia driver (185.18.36). To solve the problem I installed the current nvidia beta driver, but it doesnt solve the problem. At the moment I removed the beta driver and installed the stable release.

Does andybody have the same problem?

Thanks for help!

Best regards,

Flasher

Disabling the complete compositing system doesn't reduce the cpu usage by X.

Crap!

Damn, now you are scaring me. I will do my upgrade in one hour, when I get home... But it seems it has nothing to do with graphics, right?

I guess I will delay my update until this issue is solved somehow...

FWIW -- My machine doesn't have this problem. x86-64 and nVidia, no [testing] repo, etc. This was just an FYI...

I now have KDE 4.3.2 and works like a charm. It's kdemod though...

Not sure, but this may have to do with flash and qt glib support.  I just discovered this the other day and has done a good job helping with spiking xorg usage.

Same here (Go 7300, 185.18.36-1). I've disabled composite extension, removed flashplugin, working only with konqueror. Noting helps, but I think I've found temporary solution by removing kdm from DAEMONS array and running it only from command line.

I decided to update today and did not experience any problems so far. (KDM is not started from the daemons array on my system.)

The upgrade to KDE 4.3.2 (I'm speaking for vanilla) brings not just abnormal CPU usage: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81888

Be careful!

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

Could it be related to KDEWallet?

I've observed that X starts using 100% CPU when a KDEWallet is opened (by Kopete, Amarok, etc...)

Edit: It isn't it. X went nuts when starting emesene too sad

In my case it's browsers... Looks like something underneath.

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

I also got some problems with my cpu and X server since my last update. When I log into my KDE4.3.2 session, X.org takes 100% of the cpu usage. First I thought it was KDE4.3.2, but on #kde, they told me that the new release was just some bug fixing. Then, I supposed it is xf86-video-ati but no clue.
Something really strange, I can not have access to a tty (ctrl+alt+1/2/...) or kill the X server with xtrl+alt+back_space.
I also get the new kernel version 2.6.31.
If anyone has an idea... smile

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

Same problem here and in my case it is kdm at vanilla.
I removed it from deamons and cpu seems to act normal.
But without kdm i have no shutdown buttons sad

Anyone a solution for it ?

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

I can confirm that once I downgraded to 2.6.30 kernel my problems went away.  I first tried downgrading xorg and xf86-video-ati with no luck.

This problem is further confirmed by the Debian crowd (possibly same problem):
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=541105

It seems to be happening with nvidia/ati/intel so it's not driver specific.  Possible xorg but not sure.  People with fast/new CPU's might not notice the performance hit, but it's there.  I think kernel 2.6.31 was released on Arch pre-maturely, without the proper patch (if one exists) or settings disabled/enabled.  Or perhaps a patch for xorg needs to be made to work with 2.6.31.

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

I'm using a custom Kernel (at the moment the old 2.6.30) an the problem still exists. In my opionion it's not a problem of the new kernel version.

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

I am seeing 51% cpu usage from x with an LXDE desktop at idle on a dual core athlon.  I rebooted after updating and still see 51% cpu usage although it decreased to 1-5% after about one to two minutes.  I am using an ati video driverbut have no kde apps installed.  Could it be related to the new kms (kernel mode setting in the ati driver which showed up in 2.6.31?  Anyone who didn't see high cpu usage using an ati driver?

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

I'm having the same problem here. NVIDIA drivers and dual core intel. Always one core working at 100%.

Anyone found a workaround yet?

EDIT: And kde4 through KDM

Hey Flasher, which "custom" kernel are you using???

I had all the latest packages installed when this problem happened for me.  I tried downgrading many packages, and even starting KDE without KDM (as suggested above).  The problem still existed.  I do run abs and had an old PKGBUILD for kernel26 in /var/abs/core/kernel26 which build for me kernel 2.6.30.6.  After I downgraded to that stock kernel and rebooted, my problems with X went away.

I can say that with 2.6.31, if I do nothing and watch "top" in Konsole, X consumes ~30% CPU (idle) while my 2GHz cpu is running at 1GHz (AMD PowerNow!).  If I open up Konsole run dmesg, then try to scroll the mouse wheel, it kills the CPU, pushing it to 2GHz, and scrolling takes forever.  There is a lot of fishy behaviour when the system isn't idle, causing X to spike.  So I don't belive it's program specific.

I also tried to run 2.6.31 with X using VESA driver.  I could start X, but when I ran "startkde", X would crash with libshadow being the culprit.  Not sure if this is related in someway.

Re: [SOLVED] After update to KDE 4.3.2 ---> Xorg 100% CPU usage

I'm using Kernel 2.3.30-2 with my own config. I'm using the patchset from the official kernel26 core-repository, but I'm kicking out all the useless stuff.

Today I'm working on a new custom kernel for my system based on 2.6.31-4
