Ok this has been bugging me for a while now and has never gone away.
What causes network interfaces to change position? and does anyone know how to set which one is which permanently?
I have 2 nics in my work computer,
one is built into the motherboard the other is a PCI card,
one is an Intel 82566DM-2 and the other is an Intel 82540EM,
one uses the e1000 driver the other uses the e1000e driver.
one exists on one network which can reach the internet and has an IP set via DHCP, the other is on a private network with a static IP. The modules are loaded in rc.conf, and which one gets what IP is in rc.conf as well.
Every so often on a reboot which one is eth0 and eth1 changes. There is no rhyme or reason to this, no package updates ran nothing changes. Essentially I could reboot my computer a few times and everything comes up fine each time, then suddenly nothing works as the interfaces have swapped. Now at this point I could either keep rebooting my computer until they swap places again, or I could crawl under my desk an switch which cable is plugged into which interface and restart /etc/rc.d/network and be back up. Neither options are very appealing obviously.
It started sometime mid last year and has never gone away. The system was fine as it is set up for over a year prior to this behavior starting.
Thanks for any information on this.

Thanks
