The perennial newbie here...
I notice that a few groups I am using are no longer listed in the latest group.pacnew, i.e.
dbus:x:81:my_user_name
hal:x:82:my_user_name
avahi:x:84:
ntp:x:87:
mysql:x:89:
What is the correct procedure here? Can I just edit the group file, or should I use the groupdel command for each entry? And can I really safely remove all of these entries? I have read the Wiki file on Groups...
In my fstab I have these devices commented, thusly:
#/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
The fstab.pacnew lists them uncommented. Should I uncomment them?

You can just edit the file as needed.

That's up to you. The new file provides sane defaults: many people want to access their CD/DVD or floppy that way.

Sometimes there are introduced some changes in the way the config files work, but often you can keep the old ones w/o making any changes. It's best to deal with .pacnew /.pacsave files on a case-by-case basis.
Please familiarize yourself with the wiki and welcome to Arch.

The dbus, hal, etc. groups you have are here because you installed packages that require them to work, I wouldn't delete them.

Thanks for the replies and links.
Well, if I should keep the dbus, hal etc. groups, I really don't see the reason for issuing a new group file, as those are the only differences I could find.

Don't remove any grups or users from passwd or groups. The .pacnew is a default template, it is NOT customized for your system. Only add in new grups from the pacnew.

You probably want to keep them commented. Uncommenting them can break automounting.

I had some additional x:es in the pacnew file. Try
vimdiff /etc/group /etc/group.pacnew
if you know how to handle vim.

Thanks for the additional good advice! Much appreciated!!
I keep a special cheat sheet for Vim, so that I can exit from the thing when I'm forced to use it...

You are never forced to use it. You can set VISUAL and/or EDITOR to whatever you want.
But learning vim is never a bad idea
