Did anyone try to install VMware player using the official installer?
When it asks for the system services directory I give it "/etc/rc.d"
After installation:
No rc*.d style init script directories were given to the installer. You must manually add the necessary links to ensure that the vmware service at /etc/rc.d/vmware is automatically started and stopped on startup and shutdown.
However:
bojan ~ $ ls /etc/rc.d | grep vmw
bojan ~ $
There is nothing to start!
EDIT:
I just found this - http://communities.vmware.com/message/1546744

The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

Can you zip and send /etc/rc.d/vmware folder/files ?

I think the crucial part is to
# mkdir -p /etc/rc.d/vmware.d/rc{0,1,2,3,4,5,6}.d
# mkdir /etc/rc.d/vmware.d/init.d
I just wonder if a dummy vmware-package could be constructed which just does that. There would be the benefit that these directories could also be easily removed.
The time when Microsoft starts making something that doesn't suck will be when they start making vacuum cleaners.

Nope. I tried that.
The installer just doesn't copy those files.
What a piece of crap...

That's why you have to do that by hand. And yes, it's crap

I encounter same problem. So, I provide here copy of vmware script copied from vmware 3.0.1 version. Line 88 and 108 is edited ( /bin/lsmod instead /sbin/lsmod).

Nice comment btw.... I cannot remember that the installer ever asked for it

I ran into the same problem some time ago.
This post explains it pretty good. Just replace it by vmware player Important is to use the --console --custom options to specify the "ystem service runlevels".

Running the install binaries with the --custom option seems to do the trick...
The --console option is not necessary, otherwise it just runs in a window instead of console.
