I having this same issue:
http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org … ?p=9314305
But is in Arch obviously.
My notebook is a Dell Vostro 3300, here's my lspci:
lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12)
My system is up-to-date.
I've tried downgrade xf86-video-intel to 2.10.0-1, but X doesn't start after that.
EDIT: I'm now using xf86-video-intel-newest-2.12.0-1, but the problem keeps happening.
I appreciate any help...

Hey I just spent about an hour trying to troubleshoot, and then I realized I can simply disable KMS
Hopefully this saves you time.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KMS
You can read KMS for your specific video card on one of the following pages:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
I have an ATI Radeon card and I added the following to the end of the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
radeon.modeset=0

The new Intel drivers need KMS else X will fail to start! (from 2.10)
I have the same flashes once a miniute or so. You could downgrade to xf86-video-intel ( 2.9 , the one before the first 2.10) and than disable KMS, that fixes the flashes but you'll lose proper DRI.
