Touchpad freezing on Vaio F

I struggled to get the touchpad to work on my new Vaio F.  It wouldn't respond at all till I added "i8042.nopnp" to my kernal params.  Now, it works, but it is slow and freezes periodically.  By freezes I mean that it will refuse to move or tap for a second or so, and then go back to normal.  Highly irritating.  Has anyone else experienced this behavior?

I assume that the other issue, the slowness, is just due to a sensitivity configuration, but I can't figure out how to adjust it.  None of the options that I've seen in old xorg.confs seem to have any effect, and gsynaptics doesn't appear to work with xorg 1.8.  Does anyone know how to adjust touchpad sensitivity?
